About the Role
We are looking for an exceptionally skilled Fixed Wing VTOL UAV Test Pilot to join our flight testing team. The ideal candidate should possess outstanding manual flying skills and be capable of safely operating Fixed Wing VTOL UAVs and RC aircraft in Manual Mode under normal as well as abnormal flight conditions.
The role involves flight testing, system validation, flight data analysis, PID tuning, troubleshooting, and close collaboration with engineering teams to improve aircraft performance, reliability, and flight characteristics.
Formal education is not mandatory. Practical flying skills, hands-on technical knowledge, and real-world flight-testing experience are our highest priorities.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform manual flight testing of Fixed Wing VTOL UAVs and RC aircraft.
- Execute take-off, transition, cruise, mission, and landing safely in Manual Mode.
- Conduct prototype and production flight evaluations.
- Perform flight testing under GPS-denied and degraded-sensor conditions where required.
- Safely recover aircraft during system failures, flight anomalies, communication loss, sensor failures, or unstable flight conditions.
- Conduct PID tuning and flight-controller parameter optimization for stable, responsive, and efficient flight performance.
- Analyse flight logs, telemetry, and flight behaviour to identify issues and recommend corrective actions.
- Validate new hardware, avionics, sensors, payloads, communication systems, and software/firmware releases through flight testing.
- Diagnose flight behaviour and provide detailed technical feedback to engineering teams.
- Evaluate and troubleshoot sensors, communication systems, antennas, batteries, and flight controllers during flight testing.
- Conduct pre-flight inspections, mission planning, and post-flight debriefing.
- Maintain flight reports, logbooks, and testing documentation.
- Ensure safe flight operations while complying with applicable aviation regulations and company SOPs.
Mandatory Requirements
- Valid Remote Pilot Certificate / DGCA Remote Pilot License.
- Exceptional manual flying skills on: Fixed Wing RC Aircraft, Fixed Wing VTOL UAVs,
FPV platforms / FPV aircraft, Multirotors
- Strong ability to fly confidently in Manual Mode without relying solely on autopilot/GPS.
- Proven capability to fly and navigate using instruments/flight instrumentation, including situations where visual or GPS-based navigation is unavailable.
- Demonstrated experience or strong practical capability in long-range flying without GPS / GPS-denied flight conditions.
- Strong understanding of PID tuning, including practical experience tuning PID parameters for flight stability, responsiveness, and control.
- Strong knowledge of different flight controllers, their configurations, parameters, and practical application in UAVs.
- Good understanding of sensors used in UAVs, including their role in flight control, navigation, and stabilization, and ability to troubleshoot sensor-related issues.
- Good understanding of UAV communication systems, telemetry, RC links, communication loss, and associated failsafe mechanisms.
- Strong understanding of antenna types, antenna theory, placement, orientation, and their impact on UAV communication/range.
- Practical understanding of UAV battery configurations, battery selection, voltage/current requirements, power systems, and their impact on aircraft performance and endurance.
- Proven capability to recover aircraft from: GPS failures, Compass failures, Sensor malfunctions, Communication loss, Flight-controller abnormalities, Stall or unstable flight conditions
- Robust understanding of fixed-wing aerodynamics and flight dynamics.
- Experience with flight-log analysis, preferably ArduPilot/PX4 logs.
- Ability to identify root causes of flight issues using telemetry, logs, and observed flight behaviour.
- Excellent troubleshooting and decision-making skills under pressure.
- Willingness to work extensively in outdoor field environments and travel frequently for testing and demonstrations.
Preferred Technical Skills
- Hands-on experience with ArduPilot and/or PX4.
- Knowledge of Mission Planner and QGroundControl.
- Experience with multiple flight controllers and familiarity with their different architectures, tuning parameters, and configuration methods.
- Strong practical FPV flying experience.
- Experience in prototype UAV development, integration, and flight testing.
- Familiarity with RC radio systems, telemetry, long-range communication systems, and failsafe configurations.
- Working knowledge of UAV sensors, avionics, GPS/GNSS, IMU, compass, airspeed and other flight-critical instrumentation.
- Understanding of RF fundamentals, antenna selection, antenna placement, polarization, and communication-range considerations.
- Understanding of battery packs/configurations, power distribution, ESCs, motors, and electrical systems used in UAVs.
- Basic electronics, mechanical assembly, and field troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to coordinate effectively with design, avionics, software, and production teams.
Good to Have
- Motorcycle riding skills for easy access to remote test locations.
- Local candidate with good knowledge of nearby flying locations and terrain.
- Experience in off-road or rural field operations.
- Basic documentation and reporting skills.
