POSITION SUMMARY
Understand clinical content of a health record and assign appropriate ICD-10, HCPCS, and CPT codes in accordance with official guidelines.
Responsibilities:
- Review operative reports to abstract information and apply CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10-CM codes
- Verify LCD/NCD information as appropriate
- Utilize NCCI edits, AMA CPT Assistant, AHA Coding Clinic, and other resources as needed
- Initiate physician queries as needed
- Escalate coding/documentation problems when appropriate
- Participate in ongoing coding education
- Perform other related duties as required/assigned
- Other responsibilities as assigned
- Ability to analyze and interpret data with minimal supervision.
- Ability to work independently and prioritize workload with little or no supervision in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to collaborate and interact with various departments.
- Ability to sit for prolonged periods of time to perform repetitious tasks.
Requirements
- Coding certification through AAPC or AHIMA (CPC, COC, RHIT, CCS, etc., no apprentice designation accepted at this time)
- One year experience with outpatient coding.
- Minimum 2 years of experience as a E&M.;
- Comprehensive knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology, and diagnostic and procedural coding (CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS).
- Computer experience utilizing various systems, applications, and websites, i.e. Microsoft Work, Excel, Adobe, super coder, etc.
- Ability to access and recognize appropriate electronic documents and medical record contents necessary for coding.
- Analyze and resolve coding review questions, denials, and assist with appeals process.
- Effectively communicate coding methodologies and documentations best practices with coworkers.
- Knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, and State regulations.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Education:
- University certificate in healthcare related field
- 2+ years Ambulatory Surgical Center coding experience
