About the Role

LIGHTS is looking for a detail-oriented and academically curious Data Entry & Research Intern to support the team in organising, digitising, cleaning and maintaining research and programme-related data.

The ideal candidate should have strong data-entry and documentation skills along with an academic background or interest in Social Sciences and related disciplines, such as Geography, Geology, Economics, Political Science or allied fields.

The role will involve working with both quantitative and qualitative information and will provide exposure to research documentation, survey data, field-programme records and basic data analysis.

Key Responsibilities

- Enter and maintain data collected through surveys, feedback forms, questionnaires and field-based programmes.
- Digitise information from physical forms, registers and other documents into Excel/Google Sheets and relevant databases.
- Organise and maintain large datasets in a systematic and accessible format.
- Perform basic data cleaning, including identifying missing entries, duplicates, inconsistencies and incorrect values.
- Cross-check entered data against original forms/documents to ensure accuracy.
- Categorise and code qualitative and quantitative responses as required.
- Assist in preparing class-wise, gender-wise, school-wise, region-wise and other relevant data categories.
- Support the preparation of tables, charts, summaries and basic descriptive analysis.
- Assist the research team in compiling and organising background information for research projects and publications.
- Maintain proper documentation and file-naming systems for datasets and supporting documents.
- Assist in data sorting, compilation and preliminary analysis under the guidance of senior researchers.
- Conduct basic internet-based research and information compilation when required.




- Support the team in preparing research databases, trackers and progress sheets.
- Maintain confidentiality and ensure responsible handling of research and participant-related information.
- Undertake other research and documentation tasks assigned by the project/research team.

Required Skills
- Good working knowledge of MS Excel and/or Google Sheets.
- Strong typing and data-entry skills with high attention to detail.
- Ability to work with large volumes of data accurately and systematically.
- Basic understanding of tables, percentages, categories and data organisation.
- Good proofreading and error-checking skills.
- Ability to identify inconsistencies and missing information in datasets.
- Valuable written and verbal communication skills.
- Basic research and information-gathering skills.
- Ability to maintain organised digital records and documentation.
- Willingness to learn basic data analysis and research methodologies.

Educational Background Candidates pursuing or having completed an undergraduate/postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline are encouraged to apply.

Preferred Qualifications

- Prior experience with data entry, research assistance, surveys or documentation will be an advantage.
- Familiarity with Excel functions such as sorting, filtering, conditional formatting and basic formulas.
- Knowledge of basic statistical concepts is desirable.
- Experience working with survey or feedback data will be an advantage.

Compensation Stipend: ₹15,000 per month

Pay: ₹10,000.00 - ₹15,000.00 per month
