Job Summary

Role Summary / Purpose: The Advance Lead Engineer - Controls Simulation will lead the development and validation of Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) simulation solutions for locomotive control systems. This role involves developing physics-based plant models for traction, auxiliary power, engine, train control, and trip optimizer functions using MATLAB/Simulink, Simscape, and Stateflow, supporting real-time code generation and deployment, executing verification and validation activities, and analysing test results. The role also includes supporting HIL simulator integration, maintenance, and continuous improvement in collaboration with cross-functional engineering teams.

Responsibilities

- Lead the development, integration, and validation of Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) simulation solutions for control system verification and validation.

- Collaborate with systems, controls, and subsystem teams to define simulation requirements and develop physics-based plant models using MATLAB/Simulink, Simscape, and Stateflow.

- Develop and maintain MIL/SIL workflows, test harnesses, and automated verification environments.

- Generate and integrate real-time code using auto-code generation tools and support deployment on HIL platforms.

- Develop and maintain MATLAB and Python automation scripts for testing, data analysis, and process improvement.

- Configure, integrate, and support HIL platforms such as Concurrent Real-Time, OPAL-RT, and NI PXI.

- Support system integration, debugging, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis in real-time test environments.

- Manage simulation models, software assets, and test artifacts using Git/GitLab configuration management practices.

- Participate in model, code, and design reviews, ensuring compliance with engineering standards and project requirements.

- Prepare technical documentation, test reports, and engineering deliverables,

and communicate project status, risks, and key technical updates to stakeholders.

Qualifications

- Bachelor's/master's degree in electrical engineering, Electronics Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Computer Science, Power Systems, Control Systems, Control Instrumentation Engineering, Control and Computing, or a related engineering discipline.

- Minimum 8+ years of experience in real-time embedded systems and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) design, development, integration, and validation.

- Hands-on experience with COTS HIL platforms such as Concurrent Real-Time, OPAL-RT, NI PXI, or equivalent real-time simulation systems.

- Strong expertise in MATLAB, Simulink, Simscape, and Stateflow for plant modelling, control system development, simulation, and validation.

- Experience in developing physics-based models of engines, traction motors, alternators, generators, power electronics, battery systems, and related electromechanical systems.

- Strong experience with Model-Based Design (MBD) methodologies, including MIL/SIL workflows, test harness development, automated testing, and model verification validation.

- Good understanding of RT Linux, QNX, or other real-time operating systems.

- Minimum 3 years of experience with LabVIEW for test automation, data acquisition, instrumentation, and GUI development.

- Experience using Git/GitLab for source code management, configuration control, issue tracking, and collaborative development.

- Strong understanding of electrical and embedded control systems, including the ability to interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and system architecture documents.

- Working knowledge of industrial communication protocols such as CAN, Ethernet, RS-232/RS-485, and ARCNET.

- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.

Desired Experience

- Experience delivering complete HIL solutions from requirements definition through integration, verification, validation, and commissioning.

- Proficiency in Python and MATLAB scripting for automation, test execution, tool development, and data analysis.

- Experience developing automated test frameworks, regression test environments, and verification workflows.

- Knowledge of sensor and actuator simulation, DAQ systems, signal conditioning, and fault injection techniques.

- Familiarity with software development best practices, including configuration management, defect tracking, and continuous integration.

- Working knowledge of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV), Hybrid Heavy Equipment Vehicles (HHEV), or hybrid propulsion systems, including battery systems, BMS, traction drives, power electronics, and energy management strategies.

- Experience modelling, simulating, or validating electrified propulsion systems using MATLAB/Simulink, Simscape, and Stateflow.

- System-level understanding of locomotive propulsion, control, auxiliary, and diagnostic systems.

- Demonstrated technical leadership, solid communication skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively across cross-functional engineering teams.
