Performance Engineer

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Performance Engineer to lead performance testing strategy, execution, and continuous improvement across our enterprise Java-based platforms and APIs. This role is critical to ensuring that Wileys content and publishing platforms perform reliably at scale.

The ideal candidate combines deep technical expertise in performance engineering with strong analytical and communication skills — identifying bottlenecks, designing testing frameworks, interpreting results, and delivering actionable recommendations to engineering and product leadership.

Key Responsibilities

- Identify performance risks and areas of concern across Java applications, REST APIs, and microservices.

- Develop and own performance testing strategies, plans, and frameworks aligned to business and engineering goals.

- Design, build, and execute performance, load, stress, and soak tests for complex enterprise applications.

- Analyze test results and system metrics to diagnose bottlenecks, memory leaks, latency issues, and throughput constraints.

- Produce clear, detailed performance reports and present findings and recommendations to engineering teams and stakeholders.

- Collaborate with developers, architects, and DevOps to drive remediation of identified performance issues.

- Integrate performance testing into CI/CD pipelines to enable continuous performance validation.





- Define and maintain performance baselines, SLOs, and acceptance thresholds.

- Provide guidance on performance best practices across the software development lifecycle.

- Stay current on performance engineering tools, trends, and techniques relevant to publishing and research platforms.

Required Qualifications

- 3+ years of performance engineering or performance testing experience.

- Good expertise in performance testing of:

- Java applications (Java 11+)

- Spring Boot microservices

- RESTful APIs

- Proficiency and experience with Gatling performance testing framework

- Familiarity with using other testing frameworks such as:

- Apache JMeter

- k6

- Locust

- Strong ability to identify performance bottlenecks and root causes through profiling, thread analysis, and heap analysis.

- Experience developing performance testing strategies for complex, distributed, multi-tier applications.

- Proven ability to generate comprehensive performance reports and make clear, data-driven recommendations to engineering and business stakeholders.

- Experience with observability and monitoring tools such as:

- Grafana

- Prometheus

- Datadog

- New Relic

- OpenTelemetry

- Experience integrating performance tests into CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or similar).

- Familiarity with Docker, Helm, and Kubernetes (K8s) for deploying and testing containerized applications in performance environments.

- Familiarity with AWS cloud infrastructure and its impact on application performance (ECS, EKS, RDS, Lambda, API Gateway).

- Knowledge of publishing, research, or content platform environments and their performance characteristics.

- Robust analytical, written, and verbal communication skills.
