Optical Line System / Optical Pluggable
NE Software Development Engineer
Embedded software | Hardware interfaces | Optical transport | Coherent systems
Mandatory gate: Robust embedded/software and hardware-interface skills, plus experience in either Optical Line Systems or Optical Pluggables. If both optical pillars are absent, do not shortlist.
Role Summary
Design, develop and integrate embedded software for Optical Line Systems, optical pluggables and coherent optical network elements. Work with optics, hardware, ASIC/FPGA, firmware, architecture and test teams to deliver reliable control, management, telemetry and hardware-interface software.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop embedded Linux, firmware, drivers, DAL/HAL and user-space software in C/C++.
- Implement I2C, SPI, MDIO, EEPROM, FPGA-register, sensor and pluggable interfaces.
- Develop EDFA/Raman control, APC/AGC, power balancing, alarms and protection logic.
- Support ROADM/WSS, flex-grid provisioning, spectrum allocation and optical path control.
- Develop CMIS/SFF-based pluggable management, DOM/DDM, state handling and firmware upgrade.
- Support coherent optics and performance analysis using QPSK/QAM, baud rate, BER/FEC and OSNR concepts.
- Perform system integration, optical-lab validation, automation and cross-layer debugging.

Shortlisting Decision Guide
Evidence
Decision
Software + hardware interfaces + OLS or pluggables
Shortlist
Only one optical pillar; strong software/hardware fundamentals
Compromise / train
Both OLS and optical-pluggable experience
Strong match
Neither OLS nor optical-pluggable experience
Reject
Generic networking or optics research without relevant product evidence
Reject / review only with proven mapping
Interview Evidence to Capture
- Specific C/C++ modules, Linux/firmware ownership and hardware-interface implementations.
- Hands-on OLS or pluggable product experience, including optical components and standards used.
- Understanding of coherent transmission, modulation, BER/FEC, OSNR and relevant DSP concepts.
- Examples of optical-lab validation, debugging, automation and delivered outcomes.
