Role Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented, hands-on Embedded/Firmware Test Engineer to validate the firmware and hardware-firmware interactions that power Rove dashcams. Unlike a generalist QA role, this position is focused specifically on the embedded layer: capture pipeline, sensor behavior, real-time recording logic, OTA firmware updates, and low-level device reliability. The role ensures that firmware is stable, recoverable, and production-ready before it ever reaches a customer's vehicle.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute test plans, test cases, and test matrices focused on embedded firmware behavior across dashcam hardware revisions.
- Perform functional, regression, stress, and reliability testing directly on physical devices and development boards, not just through application-layer interfaces.
- Test core firmware subsystems: continuous loop recording, parking mode, G-sensor/collision event detection, ISP/video pipeline (H.264/H.265), night vision/HDR behavior, and SD card file system integrity.
- Validate low-level device connectivity and protocol behavior: UART, I2C/SPI, USB, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth/BLE, GPS/GNSS, and data handoff to the companion mobile app.
- Own OTA firmware update testing: installation success, interruption and recovery, restart behavior, version upgrade/downgrade paths, rollback safety, and data retention across updates.
- Analyze firmware and hardware debug logs (UART/serial console output, crash dumps, core files) to investigate failures, reproduce issues, and communicate root cause to firmware engineers.
- Run environmental and edge-case testing: power-loss during recording, extreme temperature, vibration/shock, low battery/supercapacitor failure, and long-duration soak testing.
- Build and maintain hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) test rigs and automation scripts (Python/shell) to make firmware regression testing repeatable across builds.
- Identify, document, prioritize, and track firmware-level defects in Jira or a comparable tool; verify fixes and re-run regression before release.
- Maintain test evidence, defect records, and release-readiness status specific to firmware builds and hardware revisions.
- Partner directly with firmware engineers and hardware engineers to resolve issues at the device level, distinct from application/cloud-layer QA.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- 3+ years of experience in embedded testing, firmware QA, or embedded systems engineering with a testing focus; equivalent practical experience may be considered.
- Hands-on experience testing firmware running on physical hardware — embedded Linux and/or RTOS environments — not limited to app or web-layer testing.
- Working knowledge of the embedded software development lifecycle: firmware build/flash process, version control (Git), and defect life cycle for hardware-tied bugs.
- Comfortable with lab equipment: multimeters, power supplies, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers for diagnosing hardware-firmware interaction issues.
- Solid understanding of communication protocols relevant to embedded devices: UART, I2C/SPI, USB, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS.
- Experience with defect-tracking tools,
preferably Jira, and reading/interpreting serial console or crash logs.
- Ability to reproduce intermittent, timing-sensitive, or power-related hardware bugs reliably.
- Strong analytical, documentation, and communication skills — able to translate low-level firmware behavior into explicit findings for engineering and release stakeholders.
- Bachelor's degree in Electronics, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field; equivalent experience may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience testing dashcams, IoT devices, automotive electronics, or other camera/sensor-based consumer products.
- Scripting ability in Python and/or shell for building embedded test automation.
- Experience with SD card file systems (FAT32/exFAT), wear-leveling, and power-loss data integrity testing.
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines for embedded firmware builds.
- Exposure to environmental/reliability test standards for consumer electronics.
- Understanding of GPS/GNSS module validation and dead-reckoning behavior.
Pay: ₹1,500,000.00 - ₹3,000,000.00 per year
Benefits:
- Flexible schedule
Application Question(s):
- Do you have hands-on experience testing firmware on physical hardware (embedded Linux and/or RTOS environments), not limited to app or web-layer testing?
- Which ocommunication protocols have you tested or validated in embedded devices?
- Have you previously tested dashcams, IoT devices, or automotive electronics?
- Are you comfortable analyzing firmware debug logs to identify root causes?
- Do you have experience testing embedded systems or firmware, including hardware-software integration?
