Job Description

Job Summary

The Professor of Psychiatry is responsible for leading undergraduate (MBBS) and postgraduate (MD/DNB/DM) academic programs, overseeing clinical operations in Outpatient (OPD) and Inpatient (IPD) psychiatric units, guiding clinical research, and mentoring faculty and residents.

Key Responsibilities

1. Academic & Teaching

- Design and deliver lectures, clinical postings, case discussions, and seminars for medical students and psychiatry residents.

- Conduct formative assessments, clinical evaluations, and internal/external examinations.

- Supervise postgraduate thesis projects, dissertations, and clinical research work.

2. Clinical & Patient Care

- Lead clinical rounds in psychiatric wards (IPD) and oversee Outpatient Services (OPD).

- Manage complex psychiatric cases, emergency psychiatric evaluations, and specialized clinics (e.g., De-addiction, Child & Adolescent, Geriatric, Psychotherapy).

- Provide consultation-liaison psychiatric services to other medical and surgical departments.

3. Research & Publications

- Drive clinical research projects in behavioral sciences, psychopharmacology, and mental health.





- Publish research papers in indexed, peer-reviewed medical journals as per regulatory standards (e.g., NMC / Board requirements).

4. Administration & Governance

- Oversee departmental operations, staffing, rotas, and compliance with medical regulatory bodies.

- Ensure adherence to mental health legislation, patient ethics, and hospital quality standards.

- Participate in institutional committees, academic councils, and faculty development drives.

Education

MBBS + MD / DNB in Psychiatry (or international equivalent like MRCPsych / ABPN)

Experience

Typically 8–9+ years of post-MD teaching experience (e.g., Senior Resident $rightarrow$ Assistant Professor $rightarrow$ Associate Professor $rightarrow$ Professor)

Publications

Required number of original research publications in indexed journals as designated by the regulatory body

Registration

Valid Medical Council / State Medical Board registration
