Position: Senior Manager / Assistant General Manager — Quality
Function: Quality Assurance & Quality Control
Location: MEPZ-SEZ, Tambaram, Chennai
Reports to: Head Quality
Team
QA/QC engineers, inspectors, CMM/metrology technicians, documentation and calibration staff
ROLE PURPOSE
Own the quality system and the delivered quality of machined and assembled aerospace components leaving the Chennai plant. The role carries single-point accountability for AS9100D certification, customer quality performance, supplier quality, and the inspection and metrology capability that supports both. It is a hands-on plant role, based at the manufacturing site and accountable to the plant leadership team.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Quality Management System
- Maintain and continually strengthen the AS9100D / ISO 9001 QMS; act as Management Representative for the site.
- Plan and lead certification, surveillance, customer and internal audits; close findings within committed timelines with verified effectiveness.
- Own document and change control, configuration management, record retention, and management review inputs.
2. Customer Quality
- Act as the single quality interface for customers — complaints, escapes, concessions, deviation requests and quality portals.
- Lead root cause and corrective action (8D / RCCA) with disciplined problem statements, containment, verified root cause and read-across to similar part families.
- Drive down DPPM, escapes and cost of poor quality; present quality performance in customer reviews and business reviews.
- Support customer approvals, source inspection visits, and first-article approval submissions.
3. New Product Introduction
- Own the quality deliverables in APQP / AS9145 for current parts and transfers of work — PFMEA, control plans, process flow, MSA, capability studies and PPAP.
- Prepare and approve First Article Inspection Reports to AS9102; ensure drawing, GD&T; (ASME Y14.5) and specification requirements are correctly flowed to the shop floor.
- Review customer drawings, purchase order quality clauses and specification revisions for feasibility and risk at quoting stage.
4. Supplier & Special Process Quality
- Approve, assess and develop suppliers and sub-contractors; maintain the approved supplier list and supplier scorecards.
- Control special processes — heat treatment, NDT, chemical processing, surface treatment, welding — through NADCAP-accredited or customer-approved sources.
- Flow down customer quality requirements, including counterfeit parts prevention (AS5553), traceability and certificate-of-conformance requirements.
- Manage supplier corrective actions and incoming inspection strategy.
5. Product & Process Quality on the Shop Floor
- Set the inspection strategy across in-process, final and pre-despatch stages for CNC turned, milled and multi-axis machined parts.
- Own metrology and calibration — CMM, vision systems, surface finish and hardness testing, gauges and fixtures — with traceable calibration and MSA-backed measurement capability.
- Control non-conforming material: MRB discipline, segregation, disposition and rework/repair routings.
- Enforce FOD prevention, product identification and traceability, shelf-life, ESD and handling controls.
6. Continuous Improvement & Team
- Use SPC,
capability studies and Pareto-driven analysis to reduce scrap, rework and variation on high-runner part families.
- Build the quality organisation — structure, skill matrix, certification of inspectors, succession for critical metrology roles.
- Partner with Production, Engineering, Planning and Supply Chain so that quality decisions are taken at the point of manufacture, not at final inspection.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Education
B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical, Production, Industrial or Aeronautical Engineering. v
Experience
12–18 years in manufacturing quality, of which a minimum of 6–8 years in aerospace, defence or a comparably regulated precision engineering environment. At least 4 years leading a quality function or a substantial quality team.
Essential exposure
AS9100D QMS ownership; CNC machined components; AS9102 FAI; 8D/RCCA; CMM-based inspection; supplier quality; direct customer-facing quality responsibility.
TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES
- AS9100D and ISO 9001 — clause-level working knowledge, not certificate-level familiarity.
- GD&T; to ASME Y14.5; drawing and specification interpretation; datum scheme and tolerance stack judgement.
- Metrology — CMM programming and operation (PC-DMIS, Calypso or equivalent), optical and contact measurement, gauge design and R&R.;
- APQP/AS9145, PPAP, PFMEA, control plans, MSA, SPC and process capability (Cp, Cpk, Ppk).
- Structured problem solving — 8D, 5-Why/ Ishikawa, Is/Is-Not, DOE basics.
- Machining process knowledge sufficient to challenge a process engineer on fixturing, tooling, coolant, thermal effects and surface integrity.
- Working awareness of export control and documentation discipline applicable to aerospace supply from an SEZ unit.
