Position Summary
We are seeking a Senior Structural &
- Simulation Engineer to lead design validation for LV and MV switchgear, power-distribution skids, eHouses and packaged substations. The role combines structural FEA, thermal/CFD and short-circuit electrodynamic assessment, covering product development through qualification, manufacturing, transportation and installation. The engineer will act as a technical authority and convert simulation results into safe, reliable and manufacturable designs.
Key Responsibilities
Structural Design &
- Validation
- Lead structural validation of enclosures, frames, partitions, busbar supports, plinths, skids and packaged-substation structures using static, nonlinear, modal, buckling and dynamic analysis as required.
- Assess equipment, wind, seismic, anchoring, lifting, handling and installation loads; validate sheet-metal structures, bolted/welded joints, base frames and foundation interfaces.
- Define load cases, boundary conditions, material/joint assumptions and acceptance criteria; correlate models with prototype or qualification tests and recommend design improvements.
Thermal &
- Short-Circuit Simulation
- Perform steady-state and transient thermal/CFD analyses considering component and busbar losses, internal airflow, enclosure heat transfer, ambient conditions, solar loading and altitude effects.
- Evaluate hot spots, ventilation paths, fan/filter performance, pressure drop and temperature rise; support instrumentation, testing and simulation-to-test correlation.
- Assess short-circuit withstand by translating peak and short-time current effects into electrodynamic loads on busbars, supports, joints, barriers and enclosures; verify stresses, deformation, clearances and support integrity.
Transportation, Testing &
- Technical Leadership
- Define road, sea and rail transportation load envelopes, including acceleration, shock, vibration, tie-down and support conditions; analyse lifting lugs, sling arrangements, centre of gravity and skid response.
- Support type/design-verification tests, FAT, seismic/vibration trials, temperature-rise and short-circuit tests; lead root-cause analysis and technical risk closure.
- Partner with electrical, mechanical, manufacturing, quality, laboratory and supplier teams; review calculations and drawings, mentor engineers, and improve modelling standards and reusable methods.
Engineering Deliverables
- Analysis plans, calculations, FEA/CFD/electromagnetic models and concise design-verification reports.
- Design criteria, load definitions, assumptions, margins, correlation summaries and actionable recommendations.
- Test specifications and correlation reports, plus transport, lifting,
anchoring and installation calculation packages.
Codes &
- Standards
Apply current project-specified editions and regional requirements, including IEC 61439 for LV assemblies, applicable IEC 62271 requirements for MV switchgear and prefabricated substations, IEC 60068 environmental testing, relevant IEC/IEEE short-circuit and seismic requirements, and applicable structural, welding, lifting, transport and local regulatory codes.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical, Structural, Civil or a related engineering discipline, with 7-10+ years of relevant structural analysis, simulation and design-validation experience.
- Advanced structural FEA capability, including contact/joints, nonlinear behaviour, modal/dynamic response and model verification; practical thermal/CFD experience and ability to interpret temperature-rise test data.
- Experience assessing short-circuit forces and their structural impact, plus transportation, shock/vibration, lifting and anchoring analyses for industrial equipment or modular systems.
- Strong engineering judgement and the ability to independently review complex analyses and communicate conclusions to cross-functional teams, suppliers and customers.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with LV/MV switchgear, MCCs, ring-main units, metal-enclosed/metal-clad equipment, eHouses or packaged substations.
- Hands-on use of structural tools such as ANSYS Mechanical, Abaqus, Nastran or STAAD Pro; thermal/CFD tools such as Fluent, Icepak, Simcenter or FloEFD; electromagnetic simulation exposure is advantageous.
- Knowledge of 3D CAD/PDM, sheet-metal and busbar design, welded/bolted construction, steel/aluminium structures, insulators and electrical clearances.
- Experience planning qualification tests and correlating strain, displacement, acceleration, temperature and electrical measurements.
