About the Role
We are seeking a Senior Accountant to join our team and take ownership of regulatory compliance, fixed assets, and lease accounting for a multi-location California restaurant group. This is an individual contributor role reporting to the Financial Controller.
The Senior Accountant will independently manage regulatory filings and deadlines, the complete fixed asset lifecycle, and lease accounting under ASC 842, while supporting the monthly close, reconciliations, audits, cost recovery, and process documentation. The ideal candidate will have strong technical accounting knowledge, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines independently.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Own the regulatory filing calendar for all locations and the corporate entity, ensuring timely filings, payments, confirmations, and documentation.
- Prepare and file California sales and use tax returns, Form 571-L, San Francisco Gross Receipts Tax, California Tourism Assessment, Environmental Fee, and IRS Form 8027 .
- Manage business licenses, health permits, liquor licenses, fire permits, CO2 monitoring, waste discharge, outdoor dining, and parklet permits.
- Support sales/use tax and property tax audits and appeals , including reconciliations, schedules, documentation, and agency responses.
- Research regulatory changes and monitor compliance requirements and deadlines.
- Own the full fixed asset lifecycle , including acquisitions, capitalization, CIP, placement in service, depreciation, transfers, disposals, and retirements.
- Reconcile fixed assets to the general ledger, maintain depreciation schedules, and validate the asset register.
- Reconcile capital spending to approved budgets and review expenses for proper capitalization.
- Prepare fixed asset workpapers, rollforwards, audit schedules, and property tax support.
- Lead the implementation and ongoing administration of a fixed asset management system .
- Manage ASC 842 lease accounting , including lease abstractions, amendments, ROU assets, lease liabilities, journal entries, reconciliations, and disclosures.
- Maintain LeaseQuery , including lease data, amendments, terminations, configuration, and system-to-GL reconciliation.
- Calculate percentage rent and manage required landlord sales reporting and annual reconciliations.
- Review CAM, operating expense, real estate tax, and insurance reconciliations; identify and recover landlord overbillings.
- Manage landlord accounting inquiries, vendor records, rent schedules, payment details, and required documentation.
- Coordinate certificates of insurance and property insurance documentation with landlords and the insurance broker.
- Support month-end close through prepaid entries, accruals, account reconciliations, and audit-ready workpapers.
- Analyze commodity pricing variances and work with vendors to recover overpayments through credits or repayments.
- Develop and maintain documented procedures for regulatory compliance, fixed assets, lease accounting, and related systems.
- Work independently against published deadlines and support additional accounting responsibilities as assigned by the Financial Controller.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in a multi-location, restaurant, hospitality, retail, or similar environment.
- Strong knowledge of general accounting, reconciliations, fixed assets, and lease accounting.
- Hands-on experience with ASC 842 and lease accounting.
- Experience with regulatory filings, tax compliance, or government reporting.
- Robust understanding of fixed asset accounting, CIP, depreciation, capitalization, and asset reconciliations.
- Experience with LeaseQuery or similar lease accounting software is preferred.
- Knowledge of California tax and regulatory requirements is a strong plus.
- Advanced Excel and strong analytical skills.
- Excellent attention to detail, organization, and deadline management.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently, take ownership, and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
