Role Description:
The Metallurgical Engineer will investigate material properties and performance across various metal systems, supporting design, development, and optimisation of components for industrial applications. Primarily, research focus will be on steel metallurgy.
Daily responsibilities include conducting domain-specific research into engineering problem statements, which may include conducting laboratory tests, microstructural evaluations, and mechanical property assessments. Projects will be industry-driven and will require collaborating with various teams, preparing technical reports and documentation, and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives in materials selection and processes. The engineer will also support quality assurance, assist in client-facing technical discussions,
and help translate research findings into practical engineering solutions.
Qualifications:
PhD in metallurgical engineering, or Master’s degree in metallurgical engineering + 2 years of relevant work experience
Expectations:
- Robust foundation in metallurgy and materials science, with practical experience applying these principles to metal systems.
- Proficiency in steel metallurgy, including corrosion assessment and mitigation techniques, and evaluation of environmental and process-related degradation.
- Hands-on experience in failure analysis, including root cause investigations, microstructural examination, and test data interpretation.
- Well-developed analytical skills for designing experiments, analysing data, and drawing clear, evidence-based conclusions.
- Experience in microscopy, mechanical testing, and characterisation techniques.
- Familiarity with additive manufacturing and conventional metal processing techniques, as well as relevant industry standards, is an advantage.
- High proficiency in the use of basic Microsoft Office tools.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills in the English language.
- Ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional teams, and strong attention to detail.
