Layam is hiring engineering professionals for a reputed abrasives manufacturer in Tamil Nadu. We invite applications for two opportunities within new product development: Deputy Manager – Bonded Development Technical and Technical – NPD.

This role involves developing and improving bonded abrasive products through material evaluation, controlled experiments, laboratory testing, manufacturing trials and customer feedback. The work connects technical development with practical product performance, process consistency and quality improvement.

DEPUTY MANAGER – BONDED DEVELOPMENT TECHNICAL

Experience: 5–10 years

Qualification: B.Tech / M.Tech in Chemical, Materials Science, Polymer or Ceramic disciplines.

ROLE OVERVIEW

Support new product introduction and development within the industrial vitrified abrasives segment. The role covers new bond development, trial planning, product evaluation and coordination with manufacturing and customer-facing teams to translate development work into validated products.

You will contribute to product performance, cost improvement and the adoption of structured development methods, while maintaining clear technical documentation and tracking development outcomes.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

- Develop new industrial vitrified abrasive products and bond formulations, supporting the introduction of next-generation products.
- Plan and coordinate trial wheel processing, internal laboratory evaluations and customer trials to assess product suitability and performance.
- Identify and evaluate materials and processing approaches for new product development and existing product improvements.
- Interpret laboratory and trial results, document findings and recommend further development actions based on evidence.
- Work with manufacturing teams on wheel processing and with sales, application and marketing teams on customer trials and feedback.




- Engage with customers to understand application requirements and capture feedback that can guide product development.
- Coordinate with purchase teams and suppliers on new material requirements, material testing and alternate material evaluation.
- Contribute to cost-saving projects, including reductions in the cost of poor quality, and support gross margin improvement through product and process development.
- Apply Design Thinking and Six Sigma tools to structure experiments, investigate development challenges and improve outcomes.
- Maintain development records, specifications, validation reports and supporting documentation, and track new product introduction outcomes.

RELEVANT TECHNICAL CAPABILITIES

- Material characterisation, process engineering and research and development.
- Trial planning, results interpretation and technical reporting.
- Structured problem-solving and evidence-based product evaluation.

TECHNICAL – NPD

Qualification: Bachelor’s / Master’s in Mechanical or Ceramic Engineering.

ROLE OVERVIEW

Support the development of bonded precision and industrial vitrified products through hands-on experimentation, sample preparation, raw material evaluation and process monitoring.

The role focuses on executing development trials, capturing reliable technical data and supporting product and process improvements. It also involves coordinating with manufacturing teams and participating in customer trials to understand performance under application conditions.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

- Monitor and record process parameters for recent products,



ensuring that development trials generate consistent and traceable information.
- Execute Design of Experiments (DOE) activities and prepare sample wheels, internal laboratory samples and plant pilot wheels.
- Evaluate, validate and support the implementation of new raw materials, including bonds, fillers, grains and metal inserts.
- Carry out physical and chemical evaluations of alternate or new materials to support development decisions.
- Coordinate trial wheel processing with manufacturing teams and follow up on trial wheel readiness and timely dispatch.
- Support internal laboratory testing and record trial observations and results in the specified formats.
- Participate in customer visits and product trials, capture performance feedback and support trial conclusions.
- Analyse and evaluate competitor products to contribute to benchmarking and product development.
- Assess trial wheel performance using relevant measures, including grinding ratio (GR) and material removal rate (MRR).
- Investigate trial wheel failures using statistical tools and root-cause analysis, and support corrective improvements.
- Maintain trial documentation and ISO-related process and product records.
- Contribute to timely new product development, process establishment and improvement activities.
