Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Consultant Psychiatrist to join our established inpatient team on Carbis Ward, based at Longreach House in Redruth. This is an exciting opportunity to work within a up-to-date acute inpatient service while helping to shape the future of mental health care across Cornwall through ongoing service transformation and investment.

As part of a dedicated inpatient medical team, you will provide consultant leadership for adults experiencing acute mental illness, working alongside highly skilled multidisciplinary colleagues, including other approved clinicians, within a Royal College of Psychiatrists AIMS-accredited service. The role offers strong links with Home Treatment Teams, Community Mental Health Teams, rehabilitation services and wider system partners, providing excellent opportunities to influence patient pathways and service development.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will play a key role in the ongoing development of inpatient services, working collaboratively alongside other approved clinicians, with community teams and system partners to ensure safe, effective and person-centred care.

Key responsibilities include





- Providing consultant psychiatric leadership and clinical expertise to the multidisciplinary team caring for adults admitted to Carbis Ward.
- Undertaking comprehensive psychiatric assessments, diagnosis, formulation and evidence-based treatment planning for patients with complex acute mental health needs.
- Acting as Responsible Clinician and Approved Clinician, ensuring compliance with the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act and providing expert advice on complex legal and ethical matters.
- Leading ward rounds, multidisciplinary team discussions and care planning reviews to support safe admission management and timely discharge planning.
- Working closely with Home Treatment Teams, Community Mental Health Teams, rehabilitation services, primary care and third-sector partners to ensure seamless patient pathways and continuity of care.
- Providing senior medical input into risk assessment, crisis management and complex decision-making for patients presenting with severe mental illness and associated risks.
- Contributing to service transformation, quality improvement and the ongoing development of integrated adult mental health services across Cornwall.
- Supervising, supporting and developing junior medical staff and multidisciplinary colleagues, fostering a culture of learning, compassion and clinical excellence.
- Participating in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, including teaching and supervision of medical students and resident doctors.
- Contributing to clinical audit, governance, research and service evaluation activities, supporting the Trust's commitment to innovation and continuous improvement.
- Participating in the Consultant on-call rota for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, providing senior clinical support across inpatient mental health services when required.

Person specification

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria

- Recognised Medical Degree
- Full GMC Registration
- Inclusion (or eligibility for inclusion) on the Specialist Register or a Specialty Trainee within 6 months of gaining CCT
- Eligibility for Section 12 and AC Approval

Desirable criteria

- Relevant Higher Degree e.g., MD, PhD, MSc or other additional clinical qualifications
- Completion of Clinical and Educational Supervisor Training

Experience

Essential criteria

- Experience in assessing and treating mental health patients in out-patient and community settings.
- Knowledge and evidence of participation in CPD
- Prior experience working in a rehabilitation Service

Desirable criteria

- Experience of working across different services within mental health
- Other relevant experience, e.g., specific psychological therapies
- Qualifications or experience in managing physical illness

Skills

Essential criteria

- Previous experience in taking a leadership role in several multi-disciplinary teams, ensuring high quality care and staff morale
- Ability to manage own time, workload and prioritise clinical work.
- Ability to appraise own performance
- Excellent written and oral communication skills

Desirable criteria

- Evidence of specific achievements that demonstrate leadership skills.
