Educational Qualification
- Essential: B.Sc. in Medical Laboratory Technology (B.Sc. MLT) / B.Sc. in Medical Laboratory Science (as applicable).
- OR: Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT) from a recognized institution, as permitted by the applicable regulatory requirements.
- Specialized training/certificate in Blood Bank / Transfusion Medicine is desirable.
Job Responsibilities
- Supervise day-to-day technical activities of the blood bank.
- Ensure proper blood collection, donor identification, labeling, and documentation.
- Perform and/or supervise ABO and Rh blood grouping, cross-matching, antibody screening, and other required blood bank tests.
- Ensure proper processing and preparation of blood components as per approved SOPs.
- Monitor storage conditions and temperature records of blood and blood components.
- Maintain adequate stock of blood and blood components and monitor expiry dates.
- Ensure proper issue, receipt, transfer, and transportation of blood/components.
- Maintain complete records, registers, stock records, test reports, and other statutory documentation.
- Ensure proper identification and traceability of every blood unit from collection to final issue/disposal.
- Monitor blood component wastage, expiry, discard, and inventory.
- Ensure implementation of SOPs, quality control, infection-control, and biosafety practices.
- Check equipment functioning and ensure timely calibration, preventive maintenance, and reporting of breakdowns.
- Supervise and allocate duties to blood bank technicians and support staff.
- Train staff regarding technical procedures, SOPs, safety precautions, and emergency procedures.
- Ensure proper investigation and documentation of transfusion reactions and technical incidents and immediately inform the appropriate medical authority.
- Coordinate with doctors, nursing staff, laboratories, hospital departments, and administration for blood/component requirements.
- Ensure proper biomedical waste segregation and disposal.
- Assist during internal audits, external inspections, accreditation assessments, and regulatory inspections.
- Prepare daily/monthly blood bank reports, statistics, stock reports, and utilization reports.
- Ensure confidentiality of donor and patient information.
- Immediately report critical incidents, shortages, equipment failures, and non-conformities to the authorized medical officer/management.
- Ensure continuous availability of emergency blood bank services as per the hospital's duty roster.
- Perform any other blood bank-related duties assigned by the authorized medical officer or hospital administration.
