: Arc Welder (SMAW)
Experience Required: Minimum 3+ years (Shipyard / Marine / Heavy Steel Fabrication experience preferred)
Key Responsibilities
- Perform manual Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW / Stick Welding) on carbon steel, low-alloy steel, and heavy marine structural plates/profiles.
- Execute sound welds across all positions (1G/1F to 4G/4F, and 6G for pipe welding where required) with proper penetration and profile.
- Control arc length, travel speed, and heat input to prevent common weld defects such as undercut, porosity, slag inclusion, lack of fusion, or excessive distortion.
Preparation & Fit-Up Support:
- Inspect plate bevels, root openings, tack welds, and joint alignment prior to welding according to approved Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS).
- Carry out necessary pre-heating, interpass temperature monitoring, and post-weld slag/spatter cleaning using chipping hammers and wire brushes.
- Coordinate with ship fitters and structural fabricators to ensure accurate assembly before final welding passes.
Quality & Class Inspection Standards:
- Produce welds capable of passing visual inspection and Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), including Radiographic Testing (RT), Ultrasonic Testing (UT), and Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI).
- Follow strict filler metal storage and handling protocols, including maintaining low-hydrogen electrodes (e.g., E7018) in electrode holding ovens/quivers.
Yard Safety Compliance:
- Strictly adhere to shipyard hot-work safety procedures, obtaining required hot-work permits before commencing operations inside tanks, holds, or machinery spaces.
- Work safely at heights on staging/scaffolding and inside confined vessel spaces with proper continuous ventilation.
- Wear mandatory PPE at all times: auto-darkening welding helmets, leather aprons, welding gloves, safety boots, and respiratory protection.
Qualifications & Requirements Education: Any qualification can apply
Experience:
- Minimum 3+ years of direct experience as an Arc Welder in a shipyard, ship repair yard, offshore fabrication yard, or heavy structural steel plant.
Technical Qualifications:
- Ability to pass a mandatory 6G / 3G / 4G yard practical trade test during the selection process.
- Prior welding performance qualification (welder card/certificate) approved by marine classification societies (IRS, DNV, ABS, LR, or BV) is highly desirable.
- Physical Capabilities:
- Physically fit to work in demanding coastal environments, inside confined vessel compartments, and on elevated scaffolding.
