About the Role
Application Firmware Engineer Role Summary We are seeking a skilled Application Firmware Engineer with strong hands-on experience in RTOS-based, 32-bit microcontroller systems. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in real-time system design, mission/state machine logic, telemetry and command handling, and firmware verification — building on top of the driver interfaces the Platform Firmware Engineer exposes.
Experience in aerospace, defence, avionics, or other mission-critical electronics domains will be highly valued.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement Super loop and RTOS-based application firmware: task scheduling, inter-task communication, timers, interrupts, mutexes, queues, and memory management.
- Develop application-level firmware, mission logic, and state-machine behavior on top of the driver layer.
- Implement real-time data acquisition pipelines: sensor read, engineering-unit conversion, calibration, and filtering.
- Implement telemetry packetization, CRC framing, and command decode/validate/execute/reply flows.
- Implement fault detection and fault management logic, including protected-state transitions and event logging.
- Perform firmware integration and system-level debugging at the application/mission-logic level.
- Review schematics and hardware designs from a mission-logic and data-flow perspective.
- Support design verification activities from an application-behavior perspective.
- Prepare firmware design documents, test procedures, debug reports, and release notes.
- Participate in unit testing, integration testing, and firmware release management and version control.
- Collaborate with the low-level Firmware Engineer, hardware, FPGA teams.
Qualifications
- Role Overview
- Department Engineering / Embedded Systems / Avionics & Defence Electronics
- Employment Type Full-time
- Experience 6 - 15 Years of relevant embedded firmware experience
- Qualification B.E. / B.Tech / M.E. / M.Tech — Electronics, Electrical, Embedded Systems, Instrumentation, Computer Science or related discipline
- Domain Preference Aerospace, Defence, Avionics, Space, or Mission-Critical Systems
Required Skills
- Core programming - strong proficiency in Embedded C , Python or VB.NET knowledge is an advantage.
- Solid understanding of RTOS-based firmware development, with working knowledge of the underlying MCU architecture (memory map, interrupts, timers) the application runs on.
- Experience designing application logic that consumes a driver interface rather than accessing registers directly.
- Supported MCU Platforms
- Application-level familiarity with ARM Cortex-M series (STM32, NXP, Microchip SAM / PIC32)
- Renesas, Infineon, or other equivalent 32-bit MCU platforms, as consumed through the platform team's BSP
- RTOS Concepts
- Task/thread creation, priorities, and scheduling
- Semaphores, mutexes, queues, and mailboxes
- Software/hardware timers and ISR-to-task communication
- Stack and heap management; memory safety
- Communication Protocols
- Application-level framing and command/telemetry design over UART, SPI, I²C, CAN / CAN-FD
- RS-232, RS-485, Ethernet, USB — protocol-level packet design and validation
- Debugging & Tooling
- JTAG, SWD, breakpoints, watchpoints, memory views, and trace tools for application-level debugging.
- Working knowledge of IDEs/toolchains: STM32CubeIDE, MPLAB X, Code ,GCC, Eclipse.
- Source control: Git.
- Ability to read schematics and datasheets to understand the data available from the driver layer.
Preferred Skills
- Prior experience in mission-critical embedded systems.
- Familiarity with MISRA C, MIL-STD requirements, or RTCA qualification processes.
- Experience with firmware upgrade mechanisms, CRC verification, watchdog strategy, and fail-safe design at the application/state-machine level.
- Knowledge of high-reliability and fault-tolerant embedded design practices.
- Real-time data acquisition, control systems, sensor interfacing, or actuator control experience.
- Python, VB, or scripting skills for test automation and utility development.
- Exposure to static analysis tools, unit testing frameworks, and CI for embedded firmware.
- Tools & Technologies
- Programming: Embedded C (primary), C (preferred), Python scripting
- RTOS: FreeRTOS. JD — Application Firmware Engineer
- Debug Tools: JTAG, SWD, ST-Link.
- Lab Instruments: DSO, Logic Analyzer, Protocol Analyzer, Multimeter, Function Generator.
- Protocols: UART, SPI, I²C, CAN / CAN-FD, Ethernet, USB, RS-232, RS-485.
- Version Control: Git.
