About the role
We're looking for a backend engineer who can take real ownership of features and modules end-to-end - from schema design to API implementation to production support. You'll work in a codebase built around multi-tenancy, scoped authorization, and AI-driven workflows, and contribute to architectural decisions within the direction set by our senior engineers.
The work is technically substantial. You'll spend time on genuinely hard problems: multi-tenant data isolation, permission systems that go beyond simple role checks, integrations with government systems that Indian institutes are required to use, and backend services that support AI-powered features.
What you'll do
• Build backend services in Node.js and NestJS against a PostgreSQL data layer
• Design and implement APIs that serve multiple tenants with logically isolated data
• Work on authorization systems - scoped role assignments, permission caching, audit logging
• Integrate with external systems including payment gateways, identity providers, communication
platforms, and government services
• Build async workflows using message queues and background workers
• Contribute to backend services that orchestrate AI features (working with LLMs via provider APIs)
• Write tests, review code, participate in architecture discussions
• Support production systems used by real customers - read logs, debug incidents, own the fixes
Required experience
• 3-5 years of professional Node.js development, with production NestJS experience
• Strong PostgreSQL: schema design, query optimization, indexing, transactions
• Solid understanding of authorization patterns beyond simple role checks (scoped permissions,
hierarchical roles, or equivalent complexity)
• Experience with async workflows - message queues, background jobs, event-driven patterns (BullMQ, RabbitMQ, Kafka, or Pub/Sub)
• Redis for caching, sessions, and rate limiting
• Writing and maintaining test suites (unit and integration)
• Production experience: comfortable reading logs, debugging live issues, owning what you ship
• Git-based team-oriented workflow, code review discipline, clear PR descriptions
• Solid written English - you'll write design notes, PR descriptions, and technical documentation
Strongly preferred (any two of these)
• Multi-tenant SaaS experience - you should have opinions on schema-per-tenant vs database-per-
tenant trade-offs
• Shipped features integrating with LLMs in production (OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, or equivalent)• Worked in a regulated domain (ed-tech, fintech, healthcare) where compliance affects data modeling
• Comfortable with modular monolith architecture and microservices
Nice to have
• pgvector or another vector database
• Docker and containerized deployments
• Cloud platforms (GCP preferred, AWS or Azure acceptable)
• CI/CD pipelines
• Prior exposure to Indian regulatory frameworks (DPDP, UGC compliance, Digi Locker integrations)
• Experience generating API type definitions from OpenAPI specs, or publishing internal npm packages for cross-repo type sharing
Who thrives in this role
• Engineers who want architectural depth without waiting years to earn it
• People who take ownership seriously - you're responsible for what you ship, including how it behaves in production
• Engineers who care about code that other people have to read, not just code that works
• Anyone who wants to work on AI-integrated backends before it becomes standard everywhere.
