Position Summary: VOPA is looking for a Manager, Social Media and Communications, to lead the strategy, storytelling and brand-building for our work across education, mental health, life-skills and technology-for-valuable.
This is not a content-posting role: it requires someone who understands the science behind social media (algorithms, audience behaviour, analytics) and who can independently grasp the substance of any VOPA project, whether it is a literacy assessment, a de-addiction programme, or a teacher mental-health initiative. Deep prior knowledge is not required, but the candidate must be curious enough to ask why, when, where, who and how before turning field work into a post, and confident enough to judge what is worth telling on LinkedIn or Instagram. This person will build VOPA into a recognised, credible brand in the education and social impact space.
Key Responsibilities
- Own and drive VOPA's social media and communications strategy across LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and other relevant platforms, aligned with organisational and project goals.
- Before developing any content, understand the project (purpose, context, target group, impact) by asking the right questions: why this intervention, when and why it started, who it serves, what has changed.
- Translate technical and programmatic work (assessments, field data, research, government partnerships) from verticals such as NIPUN Maharashtra, Saiyam, MYCA and Digital Learning into content that is accurate, compelling and easy for a public audience to follow.
- Apply an understanding of platform algorithms and audience behaviour to decide what to post, when, and in what format, rather than following a generic content calendar.
- Plan, create,
edit, publish and manage a consistent content calendar (text, graphics, reels, videos, stories) that reflects VOPA's voice and priorities.
- Coordinate with programme, field and research teams to source real stories, data, testimonials, photographs and videos, and verify facts before they go out publicly.
- Track reach, engagement and growth metrics, benchmark against comparable organisations, and report impact regularly to leadership.
- Maintain brand consistency (visual identity, tone of voice, messaging) across all social media accounts, collateral and external communication.
- Support donor and partner visibility needs, including acknowledgement posts, event coverage, and inputs for annual reports and case studies.
- Guide and review the work of any social media or design associates, interns or freelancers supporting the function.
- Maintain and submit monthly and quarterly communications reports, content plans and expense records.
Qualifications A bachelor's or master's degree in mass communication, journalism, marketing, digital media, social work or a related field. Certifications in social media marketing, analytics or graphic design will be an advantage.
Experience
- Minimum 4 to 6 years of experience in social media management and/or communications,
with at least part of this in the development sector, non-profit space or a mission-driven organisation.
- Demonstrated experience independently building and executing a social media or communications strategy, not only running content calendars set by others.
- Proven ability to understand unfamiliar subject matter quickly and translate it into public-facing content.
- Experience managing or mentoring junior team members, interns or freelance designers is preferred.
Skills
- Strong grasp of the science of social media: platform algorithms, analytics, audience segmentation and what drives genuine engagement, not just likes.
- Ability to grasp the substance of diverse projects (education, de-addiction, mental health, technology) with limited prior knowledge, by asking structured questions (why, when, where, who, how) and applying that logic to content.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; working knowledge of Marathi and/or Hindi is an advantage.
- Hands-on proficiency with Canva, Adobe Creative Suite or equivalent design tools, and basic video/reel editing.
- Comfort reading data and M&E; reports and mining them for content ideas and proof points.
- Analytical mindset, able to set metrics, track performance and adapt strategy based on what the data shows.
