ROLE: Research Associate (RA)

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE ROLE: The Research Associate will play a key role in the National Quantum Mission (NQM) project on epitaxial growth of high-quality hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and 2D transition metal selenides using Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) for quantum photonic applications, specifically Single Photon Emitters (SPE) and Single Photon Avalanche Diodes (SPAD). The candidate is expected to independently lead MBE growth experiments, optimize heterostructures, perform advanced characterization, and contribute significantly to device fabrication and publication outcomes. This position is ideal for a highly motivated PhD holder with strong background in 2D materials and vacuum-based growth techniques.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Independent operation and optimization of the MBE system for high-quality epitaxial growth of h-BN, 2D selenides (e.g., WSe₂, MoSe₂) and their heterostructures on various substrates.
- Design and execution of growth protocols to achieve controlled defect engineering suitable for single-photon emission.
- Advanced structural, optical, and electrical characterization of 2D heterostructures using AFM, Raman/PL spectroscopy, XRD, XPS, HR-TEM, and low-temperature transport measurements.
- Fabrication and testing of SPE and SPAD prototype devices in coordination with the device team.
- Data analysis, preparation of high-quality research manuscripts, project reports, and presentations for national/international conferences and NQM reviews.
- Mentoring junior researchers (JRF/SRF)



and assisting in overall lab management and equipment maintenance.
- Any other project-related work assigned by the PI.

EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION QUALIFICATION:

·Ph.D. degree in Physics, Materials Science, Nanotechnology, Condensed Matter Physics, or closely related discipline (candidates who have submitted PhD thesis and are awaiting viva may also be considered).

·Robust research background and proven publication record in areas related to 2D materials, thin-film epitaxy, MBE/CVD growth, or quantum materials.

Desirable: Prior hands-on experience with Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE), ultra-high vacuum systems, 2D material heterostructure growth (especially h-BN or TMD selenides), and device fabrication/characterization for optoelectronic or quantum photonic applications.

SKILLS:

- Expert-level proficiency in operating and troubleshooting MBE systems for 2D material growth.
- Advanced expertise in characterization techniques (Raman, PL mapping, AFM, XRD, XPS, TEM) and data analysis tools (Origin, Python, MATLAB).
- Hands-on experience in cleanroom-based device fabrication processes (photolithography, e-beam lithography, metallization, etching).
- Strong scientific writing, communication, and presentation skills with a good publication track record.
- Ability to work independently, supervise juniors, and deliver results in a time-bound project environment.
- Knowledge of quantum photonics, single-photon sources, or SPAD technology will be an added advantage.
