Job Overview

This is an expert-level position responsible for working with Product Development architects, management, and product managers to ensure products are meeting technical and business requirements; providing high-level research and analysis related to software design and development; solving complex problems; and establishing technical standards and best practices.

This role sits at the heart of ELB Learning's flagship Lectora Online product as it enters an exciting period of modernization, including the delivery of new AI-powered authoring features. The successful candidate will be a senior member of a small, high-trust engineering team and will own significant architectural decisions across the product.

Key Responsibilities

- Design and code units/modules that meet functional, non-functional, quality requirements on schedule; satisfying definition of done.
- Put forward accurate time estimates of work to be done on a project.
- Complete all scheduled tasks on time.
- Perform unit/module testing of software to find errors and confirm programs meet specifications.
- Fix bugs, add enhancements, and convert software to other platforms.
- Evaluate impact of software performance, and recommend improvements.
- Write and maintain documentation to describe program development, logic, coding, testing, changes, and corrections.
- Provide product content to technical writers and review for technical accuracy.
- Lead improvement of Product Development practices and procedures.
- Participate in design and code reviews with other developers.
- Assist quality assurance team and support personnel as needed to determine system problems.
- Mentor, train, develop, and serve as a knowledge resource for less experienced Software Engineers.
- Perform strategic research and design for a major technical area.
- Design patentable technology and propose and review patent applications.




- Serve as subject matter expert on product or components.
- Own a major component of the product.
- Work with marketing and product management to ensure ELB Learning's technology is positioned effectively.
- Participate in grooming of product backlog with product management, development, architecture, and other stakeholders.
- Communicate project status to all interested parties and ensure the team stays on track to satisfy business needs and client expectations.
- Ensure completeness and quality of all project deliverables.
- Identify and escalate issues and, when necessary, pull appropriate teams together to solve challenges/issues.
- Recognize potential risks and implement a course of action to address them appropriately.
- Provide leadership and direction for test automation, test planning, triage, isolation, and troubleshooting.
- Drive test plan reviews and continuous improvement efforts.
- Effectively communicate testing activities and findings in oral and written format.
- Develop and utilize automated test scripts to perform duties.
- Develop and execute customer-focused test cases and maintain associated records.
- Integrate test suites into the test management system and test harness.
- Visualize, articulate, and break down complex testing areas into simpler parts.
- Initiate and influence test strategies across specific product areas.

Preferred Education Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field required, Master's degree preferred. Additional leadership training is beneficial.

Work Experience





6+ years of experience in software development. Possess extensive experience with complex products and expert-level knowledge across multiple product areas. Experience in a technical lead role with demonstrated ability to mentor other Software Development Engineers.

Specific Skills & Technologies for this Position

Primary Skills (required):

- Java 8 (deep expertise required): server-side application development.
- J2EE technologies (Web Applications, Servlets, Filters).
- Experience with JavaScript/TypeScript and modern web front-end frameworks.
- MySQL: schema design, query optimization, and performance tuning.
- Apache Tomcat: application server configuration, deployment, and tuning.
- Strong understanding of web application architecture, REST APIs, and multi-tenant SaaS patterns.

Secondary Skills (strongly preferred):

- Experience migrating from monolithic architectures to modern frameworks (Vue 3, Tailwind CSS).
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS preferred) and CI/CD pipelines.

Nice-to-Have Skills:

- Exposure to AI / LLM-powered product features.
- Experience with the eLearning or content authoring domain.
