Role:

To provide safe, timely and comprehensive surgical care to patients, including assessment, diagnosis, surgical treatment, emergency management, pre-operative and post-operative care, and appropriate referral when required.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Patient Assessment & Diagnosis

- Examine patients and take detailed medical history.

- Diagnose surgical conditions and determine appropriate treatment.

- Order and interpret relevant investigations.

1. Surgical Procedures

- Perform elective and emergency surgical procedures within the scope of training and hospital facilities.

- Ensure proper surgical technique and patient safety.

- Maintain appropriate surgical documentation.

1. Emergency Care

- Attend surgical emergencies promptly.

- Manage acute abdomen, trauma, bleeding, wounds, abscesses and other emergency conditions.

- Initiate resuscitation and stabilization when required.

1. Pre-operative Care

- Assess patients before surgery.

- Ensure necessary investigations and fitness assessment.

- Explain the procedure, risks and benefits to the patient/family.

- Obtain informed consent.

1. Post-operative Care

- Monitor patients after surgery.

- Identify and manage post-operative complications.

- Ensure appropriate medication, wound care, pain management and follow-up.

1. Referral

- Identify cases requiring specialized or advanced treatment.

- Stabilize the patient before referral.





- Coordinate timely referral to an appropriate higher centre.

1. Infection Prevention & Patient Safety

- Follow aseptic and sterile techniques.

- Ensure proper surgical-site infection prevention.

- Follow hospital infection-control policies and SOPs.

1. Team Coordination

- Coordinate with physicians, anaesthetists, nurses, laboratory and other departments.

- Participate in OT, casualty and multidisciplinary activities.

- Provide guidance to junior medical and nursing staff when appropriate.

1. Documentation & Records

- Maintain complete patient records, operative notes and post-operative notes.

- Complete discharge summaries and referral documentation.

- Maintain required surgical registers and records.

1. Quality Improvement

- Follow NQAS standards, hospital policies and SOPs.

- Participate in clinical audits, CQI/PDSA activities and morbidity/mortality reviews.

- Participate in training and continuing medical education.

1. Patient Communication

- Explain diagnosis, treatment options and expected outcomes clearly.

- Provide appropriate discharge and follow-up advice.

- Maintain confidentiality and qualified conduct.

1. Administrative Responsibilities

- Participate in departmental meetings and hospital quality activities.

- Ensure proper utilization and maintenance of surgical equipment.

- Report complications, adverse events and safety concerns according to hospital policy.
