Senior Staff Engineer – U.S. Site Development Projects
Location: SMS, Mohali, Punjab (full-time, in-office position)
Work Mode: All project work is performed remotely from the Mohali office for U.S.-based clients and projects
Shift: Aligned to U.S. Eastern Time (ET) business hours — evening/night IST

We are hiring a senior civil engineer to lead production design delivery on multi-discipline land development projects for a U.S. owner/operator of travel centers and fuel/convenience retail sites. The role is based full-time at SMS, Mohali, working U.S.
Eastern
Time shift hours to coordinate in real time with U.S.-based engineers of record, project managers, and design teams. The primary function is leading production design and QA/QC under U.S. engineers of record; the role also carries responsibility for site feasibility and due diligence support performed under U.S. direction.
Primary Responsibilities — Production Design Support
- Lead assigned design tasks from concept through construction documents under the direction of U.S. engineers of record, including site layout, grading, utilities (water & sanitary sewer systems), and public street design.
- Review the work of junior and mid-level engineers for technical accuracy, drafting standards, and code compliance (QA/QC).
- Perform and oversee stormwater management (SWM) design: stormwater piping systems, Erosion & Sediment Control (E&S;) plans, retention/detention systems, and Best Management Practices (BMPs).
- Review and apply local municipal ordinances and county and state regulations applicable to U.S. project sites, with a focus on Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey.
- Lead preparation of plans for permitting and construction, including preparation and assembly of permit application packages.
- Prepare engineering reports presenting technical information that demonstrates compliance with client and regulatory requirements.
- Coordinate directly and in real time with U.S.-based clients, project managers, and design teams during U.S. business hours to keep project delivery on schedule; act as a technical point of contact for the offshore team.
- Mentor junior engineers on U.S. land development standards, software workflows, and client communication practices.
- Additional tasks may be assigned, as needed.
Secondary Responsibilities — Feasibility & Due Diligence Support Performed under the direction of the U.S.-based project team as workload and capability allow:
- Desktop zoning and ordinance review: permitted uses, setbacks, impervious coverage limits, parking and fueling-position requirements, and buffer/landscaping standards.
- Environmental desktop screening: FEMA flood zone mapping, NWI wetlands mapping, and NRCS soils review.
- Topographic and site-constraint analysis using public LiDAR, USGS, and county GIS data.
- Concept site layouts and yield studies, including truck circulation and turning analysis for travel center and fuel/convenience prototypes.
- Preliminary earthwork balance and concept-level stormwater detention sizing.
- Compilation of publicly available traffic count data (e.g., PennDOT, NYSDOT, NJDOT) to support site evaluation.
- Assemble and quality-check complete desktop due diligence packages for candidate sites and present findings and constraints to the U.S. team.
Engineering Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline required; Master's degree preferred.
- 10+ years of progressive, professional civil site/land development engineering experience.
- Substantial prior experience on U.S. land development projects strongly preferred, including acting as a technical point of contact for U.S. clients.
- Experience with fuel/convenience, truck stop, travel center, industrial, or commercial highway-access site design a significant plus.
- Demonstrated experience interpreting and applying U.S. development regulations and permitting processes; willingness to develop working knowledge of Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey requirements (e.g., municipal SALDO review, county conservation district E&S; review, NPDES permitting).
- Experience leading design tasks, performing QA/QC review, and mentoring junior or mid-level engineers.
- Familiarity with sustainable/green infrastructure and Low Impact Development (LID) principles is an advantage.
Software Proficiency
- Advanced, hands-on proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D required.
- Solid proficiency in hydrologic/hydraulic modeling software; Hydraflow required, HydroCAD strongly preferred (widely required for stormwater submissions in our operating markets).
- Working familiarity with AutoTURN (vehicle turning analysis), StormCAD/SewerCAD, and Bluebeam Revu preferred.
Computer Skills & Working Requirements
- Ability to set up and use VPN / remote desktop connections to securely access client servers, project drives, and licensed software.
- Working knowledge of MS Office 365 (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) for reports, scheduling, and written correspondence.
- Strong written and verbal English communication skills for clear, professional real-time coordination with U.S. clients and colleagues.
- Discipline and time-management skills to work U.S. shift timings independently and meet time-zone-driven deadlines.

Shift & Work Location Details
- This is a full-time, in-office, client-facing role based at SMS, Mohali, supporting engineering projects for U.S.-based clients.
- Working hours are aligned to U.S. Eastern Time (ET) business hours and will typically fall in the evening/night IST shift.
- Occasional flexibility may be required to overlap with client meetings across different U.S. time zones.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience acting as a technical point of contact for U.S. clients on land development and infrastructure improvement projects.
- Proven ability to see the “big picture” as well as individual project goals, coordinating across design disciplines accordingly.
- Reliable availability for scheduled U.S.-hours coordination calls and consistent adherence to the fixed U.S.-aligned shift.
- Strong problem-solving skills, especially when balancing multiple projects and providing solutions to difficult technical issues.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills for direct interaction with U.S. clients.
