Position: BI & Analytics Engineer

Overview of role

BI & Analytics Engineer sits at the Intersection of business intelligence, analytics engineering and data analysis, helping transform business requirements into trusted data products that drive operational and strategic decision-making.

The successful candidate will take ownership of reporting and visualisation solutions whilst developing their analytics engineering capability. They will work closely with business stakeholders to understand requirements, design data models, develop data transformations within Databricks, and deliver scalable Power BI solutions that support self-service analytics across the organisation.

Key responsibilities and primary deliverables

Stakeholder Engagement & Requirements Gathering

- Build effective working relationships with business stakeholders across the organisation.
- Facilitate discussions and workshops to understand reporting, analytics and data requirements.
- Translate business requirements into data models, KPIs, metrics and reporting solutions.
- Challenge and refine requirements to ensure solutions are scalable, efficient and aligned with data governance standards.

Business Intelligence & Reporting

- Design, develop and maintain interactive Power BI dashboards and reports that provide actionable business insights.
- Create engaging visualisations that enable users to monitor operational performance and key business metrics.
- Ensure consistent application of business rules, calculations and KPI definitions across reporting solutions.
- Support the adoption and continuous improvement of self-service analytics capabilities.

Analytics Engineering & Data Transformation

- Develop and maintain data transformation workflows within Azure Databricks using SQL and other appropriate technologies.
- Prepare, cleanse, enrich,



and structure data for reporting and analytical consumption.
- Support the creation and maintenance of reusable datasets and analytical data products.
- Collaborate with Data Engineers to ensure efficient and reliable movement of data through the analytics platform.

Data Modelling & Semantic Layer Development

- Design and maintain dimensional data models that support reporting and analytics requirements.
- Develop and manage Power BI semantic models and datasets.
- Ensure reporting solutions are built upon trusted and governed data assets.
- Contribute to the organisation's single version of the truth by establishing consistent business metrics and calculations.

Data Quality & Continuous Improvement

- Investigate data quality issues and identify root causes.
- Implement automated validation checks and controls to improve the reliability of data assets.
- Work with business stakeholders and Data Owners to improve data quality and address data-related risks.
- Quantify and communicate the business impact of data quality issues.

Documentation & Governance

- Maintain comprehensive documentation for data models, calculations, transformations, reports and business definitions.
- Support data governance practices, metadata management and data ownership initiatives.
- Promote the use of approved datasets, reporting standards and best practices across the organisation.
- Contribute to the ongoing development of reporting and analytics standards.

Relevant experience & education

Technical Skills

Essential

- Strong experience developing dashboards and reports using Power BI.
- Strong SQL skills for data extraction, transformation, analysis and validation.




- Experience working with Azure Databricks or similar cloud-based data platforms.
- Solid understanding of dimensional modelling and data warehousing concepts.
- Experience developing semantic models and reusable analytical datasets.
- Understanding of data quality principles and validation techniques.
- Familiarity with data governance and reporting best practices.

Desirable

- Experience with Python for data analysis or transformation.
- Working knowledge of Azure Data Factory or other ETL/ELT tools.
- Exposure to modern analytics engineering practices and tooling.
- Understanding of data catalogues, metadata management and data lineage concepts.
- Experience within shipping, logistics, maritime, commodities, oil and gas industries.

Education & Experience

Essential

- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Analytics, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering or related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- 3-5 years' experience working in Business Intelligence, Data Analytics, Analytics Engineering or a related role.
- Demonstrated experience delivering reporting and analytics solutions directly to business stakeholders.

Desirable

- Experience working within a modern cloud data platform environment.
- Experience supporting self-service analytics initiatives.
- Exposure to agile delivery methodologies.
