Role:
To provide safe and effective anaesthesia and peri-operative care, ensure continuous monitoring and patient safety during procedures, manage emergencies and provide appropriate post-operative care.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Pre-Anaesthesia Assessment
- Assess the patient's medical history, physical condition and airway.
- Review investigations and identify anaesthesia-related risks.
- Develop an appropriate anaesthesia plan.
- Explain the anaesthesia procedure and risks to the patient and obtain informed consent.
1. Administration of Anaesthesia
- Administer general, regional/spinal or other appropriate anaesthesia according to the patient's condition and procedure.
- Ensure correct selection and safe administration of anaesthetic medicines.
- Maintain adequate depth of anaesthesia and patient safety.
1. Airway Management
- Assess and secure the airway.
- Perform intubation and ventilation when required.
- Manage difficult airway and airway emergencies.
1. Intra-operative Monitoring
- Continuously monitor vital parameters including BP, pulse, ECG, SpO and respiration.
- Recognize and manage changes in the patient's condition promptly.
- Maintain accurate anaesthesia records.
1. Emergency &
- Resuscitation
- Manage cardiac arrest, respiratory emergencies, shock and other critical situations.
- Provide BLS/ALS/ACLS as per training and hospital protocols.
- Ensure emergency drugs and resuscitation equipment are readily available.
1. Post-Anaesthesia Care
- Monitor patients during recovery from anaesthesia.
- Assess airway, breathing, circulation, consciousness and pain.
- Identify and manage post-anaesthesia complications.
1. Pain Management
- Provide appropriate acute and post-operative pain management.
- Monitor effectiveness and adverse effects of analgesic treatment.
1. OT Safety &
- Infection Control
- Check anaesthesia machine, oxygen supply, monitoring equipment and emergency equipment before procedures.
- Follow infection prevention and control practices.
- Ensure safe storage and handling of anaesthetic medicines.
1. Coordination with Surgical Team
- Work closely with the surgeon, nursing staff and OT team.
- Communicate important patient risks and changes in condition.
- Participate in emergency surgical procedures when required.
1. Referral &
- Stabilization
- Identify patients requiring higher-level critical care or specialist services.
- Stabilize the patient before referral and coordinate safe transfer.
1. Documentation
- Maintain pre-anaesthesia assessment, anaesthesia chart, intra-operative records and post-anaesthesia notes.
- Document complications, interventions and patient response.
1. Quality &
- Professional Responsibilities
- Follow hospital SOPs, NQAS standards and patient-safety protocols.
- Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement activities and staff training.
- Maintain qualified ethics, confidentiality and continuing medical education.
