About the Role
MUSE is looking for an Optometrist to lead clinical consultations, primary eye care delivery, and outreach initiatives at our Vision Centre in Kaza, Spiti Valley. In this role, you will be the primary point of contact for refractive error corrections, anterior segment screenings, and community ocular health. You will work alongside an on-ground clinical assistant and coordinate with secondary/tertiary ophthalmology networks for referral cases.
Work Setup & Location
Location: Kaza, Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh
Workplace Type: Full-time, In office.
Setting: Primary Vision Centre (PVC) with community outreach camps across Spiti, along with winter mobile camp deployments across other states.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct comprehensive subjective and objective refractions, visual acuity assessments, and anterior segment examinations using a slit lamp and retinoscope.
Screen for common ocular pathologies—including cataracts, pterygium, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy—and manage timely referrals.
Oversee optical dispensing, lens recommendations, spectacle fitting, and basic inventory tracking.
Organize, mobilize, and run high-altitude community eye screening camps in surrounding villages and schools.
Supervise and mentor a local clinical assistant to ensure standard hygiene, clinical documentation, and patient registry maintenance.
Participate in winter eye care camps across diverse geographies in India.
Requirements & Qualifications
Education: Bachelor of Optometry (B.Optom), B.Sc in Optometry, or Diploma in Optometry from a recognized institution.
Experience: 1–3 years of clinical or community camp experience.
Technical Skills: Robust proficiency in retinoscopy, auto-refraction, slit-lamp biomicroscopy, intraocular pressure measurement (tonometry), and optical dispensing.
Mindset & Adaptability: High comfort and physical resilience for living and working in a remote, high-altitude mountain climate.
Communication: Fluency in Hindi; basic English for reporting; patient, empathetic with rural and elderly communities.
Remuneration & Perks
Monthly Stipend: ₹18,000 – ₹20,000 in-hand.
Living Support: Accommodation and all daily meals are fully provided directly by MUSE in Kaza (ensuring near-zero personal living costs).
Field Expenses: Travel, stay, and food are 100% covered during winter outreach camps and official field visits outside Kaza.
