Toyota Industries Corporation (TICO), manufactures and sells material handling solutions for customers throughout the world. Toyota Material Handling Group (TMHG), the material handling equipment business unit of TICO, focuses on the development and sales for material handling solutions such as forklifts, energy storage, digital technologies, and automation.

Recently the decision was taken to establish a TICO Pune Development Center for the forklift business in Pune, India. This newly established organization will be supporting the TMHG engineering teams worldwide with development centers located in Europe, North America, and Japan.

Role description

As a Mechanical Design Intern, you will support the design and development of frame, body, and cabin components for forklifts while gaining practical experience in product development.

This internship is with the TICO Pune Development Center, a sister company of Vanderlande, both of which are part of the parent organization, TICO. The intern will work under the guidance of experienced engineers and report to the Team Leader of Modeling and Drafting.

Responsibilities / Key Activities:

The Mechanical Design Intern will support the team with the following responsibilities and key activities:

- Support the design and development of components for new forklift models and options under the guidance of experienced engineers.
- Assist in developing a range of parts such as welded steel assemblies,



metal castings, plastics, rubbers, multi-part assemblies, and related components.
- Create and modify 3D models, drawings, and study files using CATIA, and learn to manage engineering files in PDM software.
- Support drawing preparation and checking by following company standards, design intent, materials, dimensions, tolerances, product requirements, and clarity.
- Gain exposure to basic design validation and FEA activities, where applicable, with guidance from experienced engineers.
- Support engineers in understanding system parameters and design requirements related to product performance, durability, and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in design reviews to learn engineering practices, receive feedback, and support design quality.
- Work with cross-functional teams and gain exposure to manufacturability, cost, quality, and product development considerations.
- Support coordination with the testing group for prototype evaluation and learn how test requirements and acceptance criteria are defined.
- Assist in preparing engineering documents such as DFMEAs, part lists (BOM), and engineering change instructions under supervision.




- Support project activities and assigned tasks in line with agreed development schedules and deadlines.
- Support design checking activities and incorporate feedback from experienced engineers.

The location and travel are:

Based at Pune at combined location with Vanderlande India (Engineering hub of Vanderlande with >1000 FTE)

Full-time internship (100%)

Education & Experience

We search for a candidate with the following qualifications:

- Pursuing or recently completed a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Prior industry experience is not required. Academic projects, internships, or coursework related to mechanical design/product development will be an advantage.
- Proficient in Japanese language (minimum JLPT N4 level qualified); N3 level qualification will be an added advantage.
- Basic knowledge of 3D CAD is required (CATIA preferred). Exposure to PDM systems through coursework, projects, or internships will be an advantage.
- Interest in product design and development for the forklift, automotive, or heavy equipment industry.
- Detail-oriented with a good understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals and willingness to learn.
- Demonstrates good problem-solving skills and analytical aptitude.
- Demonstrates good communication and documentation skills.
- Demonstrates positive interpersonal skills and willingness to collaborate with cross-cultural teams.
