About OizomOizom builds environmental monitoring hardware and software — air quality, noise, vibration, and gas-sensing products deployed in the field across multiple markets. Our product line spans Polludrone (ambient air quality), Sonicbot (Class 1 noise monitoring), Seismibot (ground vibration), OGS (electrochemical gas sensing), Sensorbox, and AirOwl (our open-source ESP32-based air quality monitor). Our R&D; team spans Industrial Design, Design Engineering, Embedded Hardware, and Embedded Firmware.
Role SummaryWe're hiring a Senior Firmware Engineer to lead our embedded firmware team. This is a hybrid role: roughly half hands-on architecture and development across our MCU and embedded-Linux product lines, and half technical leadership — mentoring junior engineers, setting coding and review standards, and owning firmware delivery across multiple concurrent product programs.
Key ResponsibilitiesTechnical leadership
- Lead and mentor a team of 3–5 junior/mid firmware engineers — code reviews, design reviews, and hands-on pairing
- Own firmware architecture decisions across product lines and make the build-vs-buy, framework, and platform calls
- Set and enforce firmware coding standards, version control practices, and release processes
- Plan and track firmware workstreams against product timelines; report status to the Head of R&D;
Hands-on development
- Develop and maintain firmware for ESP32/ESP32-S3-based products (sensor readout, connectivity, power management)
- Develop and maintain firmware for STM32-based products (bare-metal or RTOS, sensor interfacing, real-time measurement paths)
- Build and maintain Python-based firmware/application software for Raspberry Pi CM4-based products (config-driven sensor drivers, Modbus/serial interfacing, BLE, edge processing)
- Containerize and deploy services using Docker (on-device services and supporting cloud/data pipelines)
- Implement and debug communication protocols: I2C, SPI, UART, RS-485/Modbus RTU, SDI-12, MQTT, BLE
- Work closely with Embedded Hardware and Design Engineering on bring-up, debugging, and DFM feedback loops
Required Skills & Experience
- 6–9 years of skilled embedded firmware development experience, including at least 1–2 years in a lead or mentoring capacity
- Strong C/C++ firmware development on ESP32 (Arduino or ESP-IDF) and STM32 (bare-metal or an RTOS such as FreeRTOS)
- Strong Python 3 for embedded Linux application/firmware work on Raspberry Pi CM4 or similar SBCs
- Practical experience with Docker — containerizing device-side services and/or supporting data pipelines
- Solid grasp of embedded communication protocols: I2C, SPI, UART, and at least one of RS-485/Modbus RTU, SDI-12, or MQTT
- Hands-on experience with wireless/cellular connectivity: Quectel 4G/LTE modules (AT command interfacing), LoRa, WiFi, and BLE stacks
- Comfortable with hardware-level debugging: JTAG/SWD, logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, reading schematics and datasheets
- Git-based version control and structured code review practices
- Demonstrated ability to lead a small team — planning work, unblocking others, and maintaining code quality without micromanaging
Nice to Have
- Experience with sensor-heavy or field-deployed IoT products (environmental, industrial, or similar harsh-environment hardware)
- Experience with cellular modules (e.g., Telit/Quectel LTE) and connectivity recovery/watchdog design
- Familiarity with a self-hosted data stack (e.g., MQTT broker, Telegraf/InfluxDB/Grafana) for device telemetry
- Exposure to analog front-end or electrochemical/gas-sensing signal chains
- Experience with BLE peripheral/central firmware
- Prior experience in a startup or small-team R&D; environment where you owned outcomes end-to-end
