Overview

The client uses the Scala Digital Signage platform in a highly customized manner. While Scala's networking, player-management, publishing, and status capabilities are generally used as designed, most of the content displayed on screen is generated programmatically. Scala's native content-authoring tools provide the presentation shell, while custom Python software controls much of the actual content, behavior, event processing, and external-system interaction. An engineer supporting this environment must first understand how to design, deploy, operate, and troubleshoot an enterprise-scale digital signage system. This includes recognizing normal production behavior, identifying conditions that require intervention, and diagnosing issues across the signage platform, players, networking, content, data sources, and display hardware.

The engineer must understand Scala Content Manager and its use of FrameSets, Screen Regions, Playlists, Channels, Scheduling, and Content to organize and publish presentations. They must also understand Scala's content-creation environment, content deployment and troubleshooting, metadata-driven configuration, and the mechanisms used to execute Python applications within Scala content.

Because the majority of the client's dynamic content is generated programmatically, advanced Python software-development skills are essential. The current implementation uses an object-oriented, class-based architecture designed to support multiple content variations while sharing a common application platform.

A major portion of the setting has been modernized from tightly coupled,



content-specific Python applications into a reusable software architecture. Shared functionality such as event handling, network communication, configuration, logging, data processing, and common runtime services is implemented in reusable Python libraries. Individual signage applications primarily define content-specific behavior while relying on the shared framework for the underlying infrastructure.

This substantially improves maintainability, consistency, reliability, and the ability to develop new signage applications without duplicating large amounts of code.

The environment also requires network-level Python development, including socket-based communication used to access the Vision system backend and associated APIs. This role may also involve integrating specialized hardware and device drivers into the Scala environment. Candidates should therefore have experience designing, packaging, deploying, and supporting production Python applications and the tooling and automation required to maintain them.

Primary Responsibilities

- Develop, maintain, and enhance the client's Scala Digital Signage applications and supporting Python software.
- Design and maintain reusable Python libraries and application frameworks used across multiple signage solutions.
- Integrate signage applications with external systems, APIs,



data sources, databases, and specialized sensors or hardware.
- Develop and support event-processing, socket-based communication, and network-integration logic.
- Support Scala Content Manager, Scala Player, content deployment, configuration, publishing, and production operations.
- Diagnose production issues across application code, Scala components, players, networking, external data sources, sensors, and display hardware.
- Design new signage solutions while preserving compatibility with the existing client architecture.
- Work directly with client business and technical stakeholders to translate operational requirements into production solutions.
- Provide technical guidance for deployment, troubleshooting, support, and future expansion of the digital signage environment.

Required Skills

- Strong Python software-development and software-architecture experience are essential. Candidates must be capable of designing and maintaining reusable libraries and production applications rather than simply modifying existing scripts.
- Experience with enterprise digital signage, Scala Digital Signage, networked applications, APIs, event-driven systems, socket programming, hardware integration, distributed-system troubleshooting, and Windows-based production environments.
- Because the client's implementation is highly customized, the role requires an engineer capable of understanding and troubleshooting the system as an integrated whole rather than treating Scala, Python, networking, content, player infrastructure, and external systems as separate disciplines.
