Job Summary
We are an international ship owning and operating company in the dry bulk, breakbulk and project sectors. We are seeking an experienced commercial shipping leader to head our India office and drive revenue growth, profitability, and market expansion.
Reporting to senior management in Singapore, the candidate will serve as the Company's senior representative in India, leading customer engagement, business development, and commercial activities across the market. This hands-on role requires a commercially driven shipping professional with strong chartering, commercial, and operational experience, an established industry network, and a proven ability to deliver business results while fostering alignment across the Mumbai office.
Key Responsibilities
Commercial Leadership & P&L; Performance
- Drive revenue growth, profitability, and commercial performance of the India business.
- Develop and execute strategies to expand cargo volumes, customers, and market presence.
- Identify new trade opportunities and growth areas.
- Grow the trading desk out of India.
- Ability to manage FFA positions.
- Expand the charter base on Handy, Ultramax and Kamsarmax tonnage.
- Monitor business performance and contribute to budgeting, forecasting, and business planning.
Business Development & Customer Relationships
- Build and maintain senior relationships with cargo owners, traders, brokers, and key industry stakeholders.
- Generate and convert new business opportunities into profitable revenue streams.
- Lead commercial negotiations and strengthen the Company's market presence.
Strategic Contribution
- Provide market intelligence and strategic insights to senior management.
- Monitor freight markets, cargo trends, and competitive developments.
- Identify growth opportunities across trades, customers, and commercial partnerships.
- Support the Company's long-term growth strategy in India and the region.
Chartering & Commercial Excellence
- Provide leadership and guidance on chartering and commercial activities.
- Support fixture development, commercial decision-making, and market positioning.
- Leverage industry relationships and market knowledge to maximize commercial opportunities and business outcomes.
Cross-Functional Alignment
- Foster a collaborative, high-performance, and commercially focused culture.
- Promote alignment and teamwork across chartering, commercial, post-fixture, marine, technical, and port operations personnel.
- Facilitate effective coordination between India-based teams and Singapore-based functional leaders.
- Ensure local teams work cohesively to deliver commercial objectives and customer commitments.
- Lead initiatives to modernize ways of working, improve cross-functional collaboration, and enhance processes, systems, and reporting to support the Company's growth and commercial objectives.
Key Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Shipping, Maritime, Logistics, Business, Engineering, or a related discipline.
- At least 10-15 years of experience in dry bulk and/or breakbulk shipping and/or projects, ship owning, ship operating, or commercial shipping environments.
- Demonstrated ability to identify business opportunities, grow revenue, and contribute to commercial performance and profitability.
- Valuable understanding of freight markets, cargo flows, vessel operations, post-fixture activities, and commercial shipping practices.
- Strong experience in chartering, commercial management, business development, and customer relationship management.
- Established network within the Indian and regional shipping, commodities, trading, or logistics sectors.
- Strong commercial acumen, negotiation, stakeholder management, and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to influence and collaborate effectively across commercial, chartering, operational, marine, and technical functions.
- Self-driven, entrepreneurial, and comfortable operating in a lean, fast-paced environment.
- Prior experience leading teams or managing commercial activities.
- Mentor and groom the team in India and expand the value proposition of this office.
