Engineering Manager — UPI & Payment Infrastructure

Role Purpose:

Every lender and fintech in India has to answer the same questions about a customer: who are they, what does their financial life look like, and what should we offer them. The data to answer those questions exists, spread across identity systems, bank accounts, the Account Aggregator ecosystem, statements, tax filings and behavioural signals, and almost all of it arrives messy, inconsistent and hard to act on.

Setu's credit infrastructure turns that data into products: identity verification and onboarding, consent-based financial data supply, bank statement intelligence, and behavioural signals, used in production by leading banks, NBFCs and fintechs. The next step is bringing them together into applications a lender or fintech can use end to end, from onboarding through decisioning. That is the bet this role is hired for.

These are data-heavy, accuracy-sensitive, integration-heavy systems.

They scale in breadth: customers, data sources and use cases, and they carry production dependencies for large enterprises.

Much of the leverage sits in shared platform pieces: for example, intelligent routing to pick the best source for every request, shared account services and billing infrastructure. An indicator engine parses unstructured documents such as bank statements and GST filings into structured signals, delivered as an API or as a spreadsheet a credit analyst can open. We run all of it with nimble teams.

What you'll do





- Lead a team of 10–15 engineers + leads building data products and the applications on top of them
- Collaborate with cross-functional partners to identify high-leverage opportunities, shape the roadmap, and dive deep into technical design and execution details to ensure consistent delivery of high-impact business outcomes
- Own the architecture across products: decide what is shared and what stays product-specific, define the contracts between teams, and help set the technical strategy for the portfolio.
- Be a player-coach: author the designs that matter, review critical paths, take up scoped technical work to unblock or de-risk
- Scale impact per engineer; grow output through architecture, automation and AI before growing the team
- Use AI-assisted engineering aggressively for code, tests, documentation and operations
- Work backwards from enterprise customer needs; be in the room for escalations, integration design and roadmap conversations
- Define and uphold engineering standards across a team owning business-critical data products
- Drive reliability, correctness and optimize cost-to-serve across the products our customers depend on
- Grow tech leads and senior engineers, developing them through clear goal setting, coaching, and feedback

You should have

- 8–10 years of industry experience, including time as a senior IC before transitioning into management




- 3+ years of engineering management experience
- Deep experience designing scalable, reliable architectures that support real-world products at scale
- A track record of delivering outsized impact with lean teams, wearing different hats
- Experience owning customer-facing data or API products for enterprise customers
- Evidence of building tech leads who run execution without you
- Comfort with ambiguity and proof-point seeking product experiments
- Bonus: Working in regulated environments, inheriting an existing team and partnering with ML and data engineering teams
