Role Description

This is a full-time, on-site Safety Officer role based in Chennai. You will be responsible for the day-to-day implementation of safety practices across the shop floor, ensuring statutory compliance, and supporting a strong safety culture among workers, supervisors, and contractors.

Your core responsibilities will include conducting daily safety inspections of the shop floor, machinery, and material handling areas, and identifying and addressing unsafe conditions or practices before they lead to incidents. You will maintain PPE compliance, oversee the Permit-to-Work system for high-risk activities (hot work, confined space, working at height), and ensure machine guarding, electrical safety, and lifting equipment standards are consistently met.

You will conduct safety induction training for new employees and contract workers, run regular toolbox talks, and organize fire drills and mock evacuations. When incidents or near-misses occur, you will lead the investigation, document root causes, and recommend corrective actions. You will also maintain statutory safety records and registers, coordinate with the factory inspectorate during audits,



and prepare regular safety reports for factory management.

This role is well suited to someone with strong observational skills, a working knowledge of factory safety norms, and the ability to communicate safety requirements clearly to shop floor workers in the local language.

Qualifications

- Diploma in Industrial Safety (recognized by DGFASLI or a State Technical Education Board) — required if this factory is covered under Section 40-B of the Factories Act (1,000+ workers, or notified hazardous process); strongly preferred otherwise
- Engineering degree/diploma with relevant factory floor experience is an added advantage
- 1+ year of relevant experience in a factory, manufacturing, or production environment
- Working knowledge of the Factories Act 1948, Tamil Nadu Factories Rules, and fire safety protocols
- First Aid and Fire Fighting certification preferred
- Working knowledge of Tamil (statutory requirement for the appointed Safety Officer under Tamil Nadu rules)
- Able to work full time on-site at the factory, including shift-based hours if applicable
