Role & responsibilities

Purpose

Job Summary: The Quality Engineer owns product and process quality at Manjusar and is custodian of the qualifications on which LYN DRYVE's customer approvals depend - ASME Section IX welding procedure and welder qualification, NDT, material traceability, coating inspection and the ISO 9001 quality management system. This is the position that decides whether the unit clears the L&T; Energy Hydrocarbon vendor evaluation and comparable audits. The role reports to the Chief Operating Officer rather than to the Plant Manager so that product acceptance remains structurally independent of production pressure; that independence is itself an audit requirement of most Tier-1 buyers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Establish, maintain and improve the ISO 9001 quality management system for the unit and act as Management Representative for internal and certification audits.

Prepare and qualify Welding Procedure Specifications and Procedure Qualification Records to ASME Section IX and AWS D1.1; maintain the WPS register.

Conduct and record Welder Performance Qualification for every welder by process, position, thickness range and material group; maintain welder continuity records and re-qualify on lapse.

Maintain the welder deployment matrix jointly with the Production Engineer and stop deployment of any welder outside his qualified range.

Prepare job-wise Quality Assurance Plans and Inspection and Test Plans; obtain customer and third-party approval and execute to the agreed hold and witness points.

Perform incoming, in-process, stage and final inspection - material identification, heat number and mill test certificate verification, fit-up, dimensional, visual weld and finish inspection.

Own material traceability. Ensure heat-number identification is transferred at every cutting operation by hard punch or low-stress punch as the specification allows, and is reconcilable from mill certificate to despatched item.

Plan, coordinate and witness non-destructive testing - radiographic, ultrasonic, magnetic particle and penetrant - through ASNT Level II qualified third-party agencies, and carry out penetrant testing in house.

Coordinate destructive, mechanical and chemical testing with NABL-accredited laboratories as the customer specification requires.

Own coating quality: verify blast grade to Sa 2.5 as per ISO 8501-1, surface profile by Testex tape and profile gauge, salt contamination,

dust assessment, climatic conditions by hygrometer and steel temperature gauge, wet film and dry film thickness, and holiday testing where specified.

Control the calibration system for all measuring and test equipment, including the coating inspection instruments, at the frequency the customer checklist requires - yearly for equipment and half-yearly for coating inspection instruments.

Raise, track and close non-conformance reports; drive root-cause analysis and corrective and preventive action to closure.Compile and issue the final documentation dossier - material certificates, WPS and WPQ, NDT reports,

dimensional records, heat-treatment, coating and paint records, as-built drawings - to customer format.

- Maintain and submit the QC organogram, the QC inspector list with qualifications, the welder list, the

welding machine list with calibration certificates and the measuring instrument list required at vendor evaluation.
- Host customer, third-party and certification audits, including the L&T; Energy Hydrocarbon vendor

evaluation and the Saudi Aramco vendor checklist, and own the corrective-action plan arising from each.
- Report quality performance and cost of poor quality to the Chief Operating Officer monthly, independent

of the plant reporting line. Health,

Health, Safety and Environment Responsibilities

- Ensure the radiography exclusion zone is cordoned, surveyed and signed, that the source is handled only

by a licensed agency, and that the shop floor is genuinely explicit before any shot is taken.
- Verify that blasters and spray painters hold a current half-yearly medical fitness certificate before

releasing them to work.
- Verify that pressure-test arrangements, gauges, recorders and relief devices are calibrated and in date

before any hydrostatic or pneumatic test.
- Participate in hazard identification and job safety analysis for inspection and testing activities.
- Observe all site PPE and access rules, including confined-space and working-at-height controls, when

inspecting.

Mandatory Personal Protective Equipment

Safety helmet to IS 2925 / EN 397; safety shoes to IS 5676 / IS 15298 / EN ISO 20345; safety goggles to IS

5983-1978 / EN 166; boiler suit or coverall. Dust mask to IS 9473:2002 / EN 149 (FFP2) in the blasting and grinding areas; ear plugs to IS 9167 / EN 352-2; full body safety harness with shock absorber to IS 3521 / EN

361 when inspecting at height.

HSE responsibilities in this description are aligned to MFF-FORM-HSE-263, HSE Qualification Audit Checklist for

Outsourced Vendors. Personal protective equipment is specified to MFF-FORM-HSE-264, Standards for Personal Protective

Equipment.

Preferred candidate profile

B.E. / B.Tech or Diploma in Mechanical, Production or Metallurgical Engineering.

- 6 to 8 years in fabrication quality assurance, of which at least 3 years handling ASME code work and

customer or third-party inspection.
- ASNT NDT Level II in a minimum of two methods - radiographic and ultrasonic preferred; magnetic

particle and penetrant essential.
- AWS CWI, CSWIP 3.1 or IWE / IWT certification is a distinct advantage. A coating inspection

qualification (NACE / FROSIO) is an advantage given the blasting and painting scope.
- Demonstrated experience of facing Tier-1 customer vendor audits (L&T;, Thermax, Godrej, EIL, PDIL or

equivalent).

Competencies

- Working command of ASME Section VIII Division 1, Section IX and Section V; AWS D1.1; IS 2062

and SA-series material specifications.
- Practical command of ISO 9001:2015, with working familiarity of ISO 14001:2015 and ISO

45001:2018.Competent use of vernier, micrometer, height gauge, weld gauge, root gap gauge, hi-lo gauge, bridge cam gauge, digital spirit level, ultrasonic thickness gauge and go / no-go gauges; CMM and 3D scanning exposure an advantage.
- Competent use of coating inspection instruments: DFT gauge for ferrous and non-ferrous, WFT gauge,

hygrometer and steel temperature gauge, salt contamination meter, profile gauge with Testex tape in coarse and extra-coarse, hypodermic needle gauge, dust assessment tape and inspection mirror.
- Radiographic film interpretation capability.
- Documentation discipline of a standard high enough to survive a customer audit without preparation.
- Personal firmness - able to reject work and hold the position under commercial and production pressure.
