Role & responsibilities

Position: Staff Nurse, IV Therapy & Phlebotomy

Primary responsibilities

1. IV Therapy Perform peripheral IV cannulation using proper aseptic technique.

Prepare IV lines, saline, prescribed medications and infusion materials as per doctors instructions. Administer IV fluids, vitamins, medications or other prescribed infusions only after proper medical orders.

Check patient identity, prescription, allergies and relevant history before starting treatment.

Record baseline vitals before starting IV therapy.

Monitor the patient throughout the infusion.

Observe for pain, swelling, redness, leakage, infiltration, extravasation, phlebitis or allergic reactions.

Stop the infusion and immediately inform the doctor if any adverse reaction occurs.

Remove IV cannula safely after completion of therapy.

Maintain proper IV therapy documentation.

1. Blood Collection and Phlebotomy Perform venous blood collection safely and confidently.

Handle routine and difficult blood draws. Use correct vacutainers and collection tubes according to the prescribed tests.

Follow correct order of draw.

Label all samples immediately after collection.

Cross-check patient name, test details and sample labels before dispatch.

Ensure proper storage and transportation of blood samples.

Coordinate with diagnostic laboratories for sample collection and pickup.

Maintain records of samples sent and reports received.

1. Patient Monitoring Check and record blood pressure, pulse, temperature, oxygen saturation, respiratory rate and other vitals when required.

Monitor patients before, during and after procedures. Identify symptoms such as dizziness, fainting, breathlessness, nausea, chest discomfort, allergic reactions or abnormal vitals.

Immediately alert the doctor in case of any clinical concern.





Assist in management of vasovagal episodes and other minor procedure-related reactions.

1. Procedure Assistance Assist doctors during aesthetic, dermatological, hair and wellness procedures.

Prepare procedure trays and consumables. Maintain sterile and aseptic conditions during procedures.

Assist with PRP, GFC and other blood-based procedures where applicable.

Assist with dressing and post-procedure care.

Prepare patients before procedures and explain basic procedure instructions as directed by the doctor.

1. Infection Control Follow strict hand hygiene and infection-control protocols.

Maintain aseptic technique during cannulation, blood collection and procedures. Ensure proper sterilisation and disinfection of reusable equipment.

Dispose of needles, cannulas, syringes and sharps immediately in approved sharps containers.

Follow biomedical waste segregation protocols.

Prevent cross-contamination between patients.

1. Emergency Preparedness Know the location and contents of the emergency tray and crash cart.

Regularly check emergency medicines, oxygen supply and emergency equipment. Check expiry dates of emergency medicines.

Assist the doctor during allergic reactions, anaphylaxis, syncope or other medical emergencies.

Perform Basic Life Support if required and trained to do so.

1. Medication and Consumable Management Maintain stock of IV sets, cannulas, syringes, vacutainers, gloves,



dressings and other nursing consumables.

Check expiry dates regularly. Maintain minimum stock levels.

Inform the clinic manager before critical stock reaches reorder level.

Store medicines and consumables according to manufacturer requirements.

Maintain cold-chain products where applicable.

1. Documentation Maintain IV therapy records.

Maintain blood collection records. Document patient vitals and observations.

Document medicines, fluids and consumables administered.

Record batch number and expiry details where required.

Document any adverse event or complication immediately.

Maintain confidentiality of all patient information.

1. Patient Care Communicate calmly and professionally with patients.

Make patients comfortable during blood collection and IV procedures. Explain basic pre-procedure and post-procedure instructions.

Maintain patient privacy and dignity.

Escalate clinical questions to the doctor rather than giving independent medical advice.

1. Clinic Operations Keep the nursing and procedure areas clean and organised.

Prepare the treatment room before each procedure. Ensure all required equipment is functional before procedures begin.

Coordinate with reception, doctors and other clinic staff.

Assist in maintaining patient flow during busy clinic hours.

Complete opening and closing nursing checklists.

Perform any other nursing duties assigned by the treating doctor or clinic management.

Key role limitation The nurse must work according to written or verbal medical orders and clinic protocols. She should not independently prescribe medicines, modify IV formulations, change dosages or provide medical diagnoses without approval from the treating doctor.
