Position: Lab Technician

Location: Hyderabad

Reporting To: Laboratory In-Charge / Pathologist / Hospital Management

Job Summary The Lab Technician is responsible for accurate collection, processing, testing, documentation, and reporting of patient samples while maintaining strict standards of quality, infection control, patient safety, and laboratory hygiene.

The role requires timely coordination with doctors, nursing teams, emergency, ICU, OPD, IPD, and other hospital departments to ensure laboratory investigations are completed accurately and within the defined turnaround time.

Key Responsibilities

- Collect blood, urine, stool, sputum, and other clinical samples according to prescribed protocols.
- Perform phlebotomy for OPD, IPD, ICU, emergency, and health-check patients.
- Properly identify patients before sample collection and ensure correct labeling of every specimen.
- Perform routine laboratory investigations in areas including:
- Hematology
- Biochemistry
- Clinical Pathology
- Serology
- Immunology
- Urine and stool analysis
- Blood glucose testing
- Coagulation tests
- Other investigations as authorized by the laboratory/pathologist
- Operate laboratory analyzers and equipment according to manufacturer and hospital SOPs.
- Perform daily calibration, quality control, maintenance, and cleaning of laboratory equipment.
- Immediately inform the concerned doctor, nurse, or authorized clinical team regarding critical laboratory values.
- Ensure accurate entry of investigation results into the HMIS/LIS and avoid transcription errors.
- Maintain prescribed Turnaround Time (TAT) for routine, emergency, ICU, and STAT investigations.
- Verify sample quality and identify hemolyzed, clotted, insufficient, improperly collected, or incorrectly labeled samples.
- Coordinate recollection of samples whenever required.
- Maintain laboratory registers, quality-control records, temperature logs, reagent records, maintenance logs, and other required documentation.
- Monitor laboratory reagent and consumable stock levels and inform the Laboratory In-Charge before shortages occur.




- Check reagent expiry dates, storage conditions, lot numbers, and inventory regularly.
- Follow biomedical waste-management guidelines and ensure appropriate segregation and disposal of laboratory waste.
- Follow infection-control protocols, including use of PPE and safe handling of blood and biological specimens.
- Maintain cleanliness and hygiene of laboratory workstations, equipment, sample-processing areas, and collection rooms.
- Coordinate with doctors, nurses, billing, front office, pharmacy, radiology, ICU, emergency, and other departments whenever required.
- Support preventive health-check packages, camps, corporate health programs, and outreach activities.
- Maintain confidentiality of all patient information, investigation results, and medical records.

Emergency & Critical Care Responsibilities The Lab Technician must:
- Prioritize emergency and ICU samples.
- Ensure rapid processing of STAT investigations.
- Immediately communicate critical values according to hospital protocol.
- Maintain availability of essential investigations during assigned shifts.
- Coordinate effectively during medical emergencies.

Quality & Safety Responsibilities The Lab Technician shall ensure:
- Internal Quality Control (IQC) is performed as scheduled.
- Calibration is completed according to equipment requirements.
- Quality-control failures are immediately reported.
- Laboratory SOPs are followed consistently.
- Sample identification errors are prevented.
- Appropriate infection-control practices are maintained.
- Documentation is complete and traceable.
- No laboratory result is manipulated, altered, or released without appropriate authorization.

Key Performance Indicators – KPI Performance will be monitored based on:

Sample Collection Accuracy: ≥99%





Patient Identification / Labeling Errors: Zero target

Routine Test TAT Compliance: ≥95%

Emergency / STAT Test TAT Compliance: ≥95%

Critical Value Communication: 100%

Quality-Control Compliance: 100%

Equipment Maintenance Documentation: 100%

Expired Reagents: Zero target

Biomedical Waste Compliance: 100%

Patient Complaints Related to Sample Collection: Minimum / Zero target

HMIS/LIS Result Entry Accuracy: ≥99%

Qualification

- DMLT – Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology

or
- B.Sc. MLT – Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Technology

or
- Equivalent recognized laboratory qualification.

Registration/licensing should be maintained wherever applicable under local regulations.

Experience

- Minimum: 1 year of relevant hospital/laboratory experience preferred.
- Freshers with strong technical knowledge and practical skills may also be considered.
- Experience in a multispeciality hospital, emergency laboratory, ICU laboratory, or NABL-accredited laboratory will be an advantage.

Important Responsibility No investigation report should be delayed because of avoidable operational issues. Any critical result, equipment breakdown, reagent shortage, sample error, or major delay must immediately be escalated to the Laboratory In-Charge and concerned clinical team.

Pay: ₹10,000.00 - ₹15,000.00 per month
