Role & responsibilities
Overall responsibility for operation and development of the Mechanical, Metallurgical and Chemical Testing Laboratory.
- Carry out/supervise testing of ferrous and non-ferrous materials, steels, stainless steels, castings, forgings and weldments.
- Supervise mechanical testing including:
- Tensile, yield, elongation and related tests on UTM
- Impact testing (Charpy/Izod)
- Hardness testing Brinell, Rockwell and, where applicable, Vickers
- Conduct/supervise metallurgical examination including microstructure, grain size, inclusion, decarburisation and defect/failure examination using metallurgical microscopes.
- Operate and/or supervise OES/Spectrometer for chemical composition analysis and ensure correct calibration, standards and reference samples.
- Interpret applicable IS, ASTM, ISO, EN and customer/Railway specifications and prepare reliable test reports.
- Develop and maintain laboratory SOPs, test methods, Quality Manual,
records and documentation required under ISO/IEC 17025.
- Take a lead role in obtaining NABL accreditation
- Investigate material failures/non-conformities and support Quality, Purchase, Production and Engineering teams in root-cause analysis.
Preferred candidate profile 815 years’ relevant experience in a material/metallurgical testing laboratory, preferably in heavy engineering, railway, automotive, wind-energy, casting/casting/forging or fabrication industry.
- Practical experience with UTM, impact testing, Brinell/Rockwell/Vickers hardness testing, metallurgical microscopy and OES spectrometer.
- Valuable knowledge of ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, heat treatment, castings, forgings and welding.
- Hands-on experience with NABL/ISO 17025 accredition
