ABOUT THE ROLE

We are looking for an experienced Lead Cable System Engineer to lead and deliver cable system engineering activities for HV and EHV substation projects.

The ideal candidate will have strong technical expertise in HV/EHV cable systems ranging from 11kV to 400kV, with 132kV design experience highly desirable. The role involves technical leadership, design review, project coordination and interaction with Project Managers, engineering teams, clients and Distribution Network Operators (DNOs).

The successful candidate will work across HVAC and HVDC projects and independently deliver engineering activities in line with project budgets, schedules, applicable standards and regulatory requirements.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

- Lead a team of 2–3 Engineers and CAD professionals.
- Ensure projects remain on track and achieve agreed milestones and deliverables.
- Liaise with Project Managers and Head of Engineering on project progress and technical matters.
- Prepare and provide regular project status updates.
- Review and approve design work prepared by Senior Engineers.
- Support team members with technical guidance, development and annual performance appraisal activities.
- Coordinate with Primary Engineering and other project disciplines.
- Identify technical risks and support appropriate mitigation measures.
- Attend meetings with clients and DNOs and provide technical input when required.

TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

- Perform HVAC cable calculations in accordance with local DNO regulations and applicable industry standards.
- Strong working knowledge of ENA, IEC and BS standards.
- Perform cable sizing calculations for HV/EHV and substation applications.




- Carry out cable pulling and cable thrust calculations and prepare technical reports.
- Develop feasibility drawings for cable routes and trench sections.
- Design and optimise cable routing, cable management systems and JB locations.
- Develop cable system designs for HV and EHV cables.
- Support cable and cable-accessory design and procurement activities.
- Design cable sealing-end structures and coordinate interfaces with Primary Design Engineering.
- Prepare detailed cable reports and coordinate technical information with other disciplines.
- Raise and manage RFIs/TQs at project commencement and lead technical information requirements.
- Review and optimise designs and propose engineering solutions to project challenges.
- Review supplier drawings, technical documentation and datasheets.
- Support technical inputs for tender proposals.
- Attend and contribute to client and DNO technical meetings.
- Carry out AutoCAD drawings and modifications when required.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

- Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.




- Proven experience in HV/EHV cable system engineering and design.
- Experience working with cable systems from 11kV to 400kV.
- 132kV cable design experience is highly desirable.
- Strong understanding of applicable ENA, IEC, BS and DNO standards.
- Experience in cable sizing, cable pulling and cable thrust calculations.
- Experience with cable routing, trench design and cable management systems.
- Experience coordinating with multiple engineering disciplines.
- Experience reviewing engineering deliverables and supplier documentation.
- Solid AutoCAD skills.
- Ability to independently manage technical activities with minimal supervision.
- Experience leading a small engineering team is desirable.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
