As our technology and digital capabilities continue to grow, we are looking for a Backend Developer / Data Engineer to join our India-based technology team and help develop reliable systems, data infrastructure and backend services that support our internal operations and technology platforms.

The Role

You will be responsible for developing, maintaining and improving backend applications, APIs, databases and data pipelines used across GCRS technology platforms and internal systems.

The role combines backend software development and data engineering, making it suitable for someone who enjoys building robust systems while also working with structured data, integrations, automation and reporting.

You will work closely with developers, product stakeholders and business teams to understand requirements and translate them into scalable technical solutions.

This is a hands-on role in a growing environment where you will have the opportunity to contribute to architecture, development standards, automation and the improvement of our overall technology infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

- Design, develop and maintain backend applications and services
- Develop secure and reliable APIs and integrations
- Build and maintain databases and data models
- Develop data pipelines for collecting, transforming and processing information
- Integrate internal systems and third-party services through APIs
- Write clean, maintainable and well-documented code
- Optimise backend performance, database queries and system reliability




- Develop automated processes for data handling and operational workflows
- Support the development of reporting and analytics infrastructure
- Ensure data accuracy, consistency and integrity
- Identify and resolve backend and data-related issues
- Conduct testing, debugging and performance improvements
- Work with frontend developers to support application functionality
- Collaborate with AI and technology teams where backend or data infrastructure is required
- Maintain appropriate technical documentation
- Support deployment and ongoing maintenance of applications
- Monitor systems and investigate technical issues
- Follow appropriate security and data-protection practices
- Contribute to technical architecture and development standards
- Continuously identify opportunities to improve automation and efficiency

What We Are Looking For

We are looking for someone who is technically strong, analytical and comfortable working across backend development and data.

You should enjoy solving problems, understanding how systems work and building reliable solutions rather than simply completing individual coding tasks.

You will need to be comfortable working independently while also collaborating closely with other technology and business teams.

Essential Experience and Skills

- Experience in backend development, software engineering or data engineering
- Strong knowledge of at least one backend programming language such as Python, Java, Node.js or similar
- Strong understanding of databases and SQL
- Experience developing APIs and system integrations
- Understanding of data structures and data modelling
- Experience working with relational databases
- Understanding of data pipelines and ETL/ELT processes
- Good understanding of software development principles
- Experience with Git and version control




- Strong debugging and problem-solving skills
- Understanding of application security and data protection
- Ability to understand business requirements and translate them into technical solutions
- Solid attention to detail
- Ability to document technical work clearly
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines

Desirable Experience

- Python-based data engineering and development of data processing pipelines.
- PostgreSQL, MySQL or similar relational database technologies.
- Cloud platforms such as AWS, Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud.
- Docker for application containerization and deployment.
- Data warehouses, business intelligence systems or analytics platforms.
- Automation and workflow tools used for streamlining data and operational processes.
- AI/ML systems and their integration with data engineering workflows.
- Handling large, complex or high-volume datasets.
- SaaS, consultancy, technology or professional services environments.
