We are an AI-native startup building in a rapidly evolving market. We believe a small engineering team can move with exceptional speed when it combines AI-assisted development, sound architecture, automation, and clear ownership.
We are looking for one hands-on engineering leader to own both the technical direction of the platform and the team's ability to deliver. This person will make the architectural decisions, turn them into executable plans, and stay accountable until reliable software reaches production.

The Role
Your primary responsibility is to help Wondrfly build the right software and ship it well. You will own architecture and delivery as one connected responsibility, from technical strategy and system design through implementation, release, and operation.
This is a player-coach role. You will write and review production code, solve difficult technical problems, mentor engineers, set standards, remove blockers, and create a predictable path from product priorities to shipped outcomes. It is not a management-only or coordination-only position.
You will work directly with the CEO, product leadership, and engineers. Product leadership owns customer and business priorities; you own the technical approach, technical roadmap, engineering quality, and delivery execution needed to meet them.
What You Will Own
Technical Architecture
You will set and maintain the long-term technical direction of the platform while making pragmatic decisions for a startup that must ship quickly.
- Define system boundaries, service responsibilities, data models, APIs, integrations, and deployment patterns
- Make and document architectural decisions, including alternatives, tradeoffs, risks, and migration paths
- Set standards for reliability, security, performance, observability, testing, and maintainability
- Own technical debt and platform evolution so short-term delivery does not create avoidable long-term constraints
- Decide when to build, buy, simplify, refactor, or retire technology
- Keep the architecture coherent as the product, team, and use of AI evolve
Engineering Delivery
You will translate product priorities and architectural decisions into clear, sequenced work and drive that work through production.
- Know what the team is building, why it matters, what is blocked, and what will ship next
- Break ambiguous initiatives into milestones with clear ownership, dependencies, risks, and acceptance criteria
- Remove blockers quickly and make timely decisions when scope, quality, or architecture is unclear
- Set realistic commitments and improve delivery predictability without hiding risk or sacrificing essential quality
- Lead releases, production readiness, incident response, and follow-through on operational issues
- Ensure architectural decisions are reflected in implementation rather than remaining separate design documents
Hands-on Engineering
You will remain close enough to the code and production systems to make informed decisions and help the team through its hardest work.
- Write production code for critical features, platform work, integrations, and technical spikes
- Review pull requests and designs for correctness, clarity, security, performance, and alignment with the architecture
- Debug complex issues across frontend, backend, data, cloud infrastructure, and third-party services
- Pair with engineers when a problem needs faster learning or deeper technical support
- Validate important design choices with working software and production evidence
Team Effectiveness
- Coach engineers through design reviews, code reviews, pair programming, and direct feedback
- Raise the team's ability to reason about tradeoffs, own outcomes, and communicate risks early
- Improve development workflows, release practices, technical documentation, and engineering visibility
- Reduce unnecessary coordination and protect time for valuable engineering work
- Build a culture where commitments matter, ownership is expected, and important work does not quietly drift
AI-Native Engineering
AI should improve both how we build and what our product can do. You will set practical standards for using it safely and effectively.
- Improve AI-assisted coding, testing, debugging, documentation, and agent-based development workflows
- Choose where automation creates real leverage and where human review remains essential
- Establish evaluation, observability, cost, privacy, and reliability practices for production AI features
- Help engineers use AI tools with good judgment rather than treating generated output as automatically correct
Visibility and Accountability
Company leadership should have a clear view of current work, delivery confidence, architectural risks, and decisions that need attention. You will create that visibility and communicate changes early.
What Success Looks Like
After Three Months
- You are contributing production code and are trusted to make important technical decisions
- The current architecture, major risks, technical debt, and near-term evolution path are clear
- Priority work has visible owners, milestones, dependencies, and delivery risks
- Blockers and design questions are resolved quickly
- Engineers see you as a rigorous, practical, and supportive technical leader
- AI-assisted development practices are improving with appropriate review and measurement
After Twelve Months
- The platform has a coherent architecture that supports current product needs and expected growth
- The team ships valuable software faster and with better predictability
- Reliability, performance, security, and maintainability have improved
- Architectural decisions lead to completed migrations and production outcomes
- Engineers make stronger decisions and take more ownership
- AI tools and automation are part of everyday engineering work and are used with transparent standards
What We Are Looking For
Architecture ownership You have personally owned consequential production architecture decisions and carried them through implementation, migration, and operation. You can explain the alternatives, tradeoffs, and results.
Technical depth You can design and debug modern web systems across frontend,
backend, data, APIs, integrations, and cloud infrastructure. You stay close enough to the code to make sound decisions.
Delivery leadership You can turn ambiguous goals into executable work, create realistic commitments, remove blockers, surface risk, and drive important work to completion.
Ownership and urgency You step into problems, make decisions with the available evidence, follow through, and communicate early when conditions change.
Strong communication You explain technical choices clearly to engineers and company leaders, create useful visibility, and handle difficult conversations directly.
Low ego You invite challenge, change your mind when the evidence changes, and care more about the team's result than personal credit.
Minimum Qualifications
- At least 8 years of qualified software engineering experience
- Substantive production experience with Angular 18+
- Demonstrated ownership of production software architecture at the system or platform level
- Strong full-stack engineering experience, including backend services and modern web applications
- Experience leading significant software from design through production delivery
- Available for a full-time role
Relevant Technical Experience
Strong candidates will have meaningful experience across most of the following areas:
- Node.js with Express or NestJS
- Angular and contemporary frontend architecture
- MongoDB and production data modeling
- AWS, cloud infrastructure, CI/CD, observability, and incident response
- API design, integrations, asynchronous processing, caching, and scalable systems
- Production AI features using platforms such as OpenAI or Gemini
- AI-assisted engineering workflows, automation, and agent-based tools
- Small, fast-moving startup teams
Ideal Background
Successful candidates may have worked as an AI Engineering Lead, Lead Full-Stack Engineer, Staff or Principal Engineer with delivery ownership, Startup Engineering Lead, Founding Engineer, or hands-on Engineering Manager. The title matters less than evidence that you personally owned both the architecture and the result.
This Role Is Not For You If
- Your experience is primarily project management, scrum management, program management, or delivery coordination without deep software engineering work
- You prefer to hand architecture to someone else or manage implementation from a distance
- You produce designs but do not stay accountable through delivery and operation
- You need constant direction or avoid making difficult technical decisions
- You allow risks, blockers, or missed commitments to remain unclear
- You are uncomfortable in a fast-moving startup where priorities and constraints can change
