The Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) is an autonomous
institution set up by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India to promote the nucleation
and growth of active groups in astronomy and astrophysics at Indian universities. IUCAA aims
to be a Centre of excellence within the university sector for teaching, research and development
in astronomy and astrophysics.
The Centre invites online applications from Indian nationals possessing an excellent academic
record and relevant work experience for the following position: -

B.E./B.Tech./M.Sc./MCA/MCS or equivalent degree in Physics/
E&TC; / Computer Science / Comp. Engg. / IT or any related field.
8. Experience
Minimum two (2) years of relevant professional experience in Linux
system administration, DevOps, infrastructure/platform
engineering, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), cloud/private-
cloud operations, HPC/HTC administration or a closely related
area. The candidate should have demonstrable hands-on
experience in administering production Linux systems and in
automation using scripting and/or configuration-management tools.

Job Description:
The DevOps Engineer will participate in the operation, maintenance, automation,
monitoring and continuous improvement of the High-Throughput Computing and
Collaboration Support Infrastructure of the LIGO-India/GW Data Centre.
The infrastructure includes a large Linux-based HTCondor compute facility, scientific
storage and data-access systems, Proxmox-based virtualization, web/application and
collaboration services, high-speed networking and associated monitoring and security
infrastructure.
The engineer will work with system, storage, network, security and scientific-computing
personnel to progressively automate infrastructure deployment and operation and to
improve reliability, reproducibility, maintainability and security of production services.
The selected engineer will be expected to work across multiple technology areas rather
than exclusively administering a single product. The engineer should therefore have
strong fundamentals in Linux, automation, networking and troubleshooting, together

with the ability to acquire expertise in specialised technologies used by the GW Data
Centre.
Job Responsibilities:
The selected candidate will be responsible for activities including, but not limited to:
Infrastructure Automation and Configuration Management, HTC Infrastructure,
Virtualization, Application and Collaboration Services, Responsibilities shall include
deployment, upgrades, configuration, monitoring, backup/recovery and troubleshooting
of these services: CI/CD, Containers, Scientific Software Distribution, Monitoring,
Logging and Reliability, Storage and Data Services, Network and Security Integration,
Backup and Disaster Recovery, Documentation and Operational Procedures.
Job Duties:
The position will involve a combination of routine production operations and engineering
activities. Typical duties include:
- monitoring production services and responding to alerts;
- diagnosing Linux,
network, storage and application problems;
- deploying configuration changes through controlled procedures;
- patching and upgrading infrastructure;
- maintaining automation code;
- reviewing failed CI/CD pipelines;
- provisioning servers and VMs;
- troubleshooting HTC jobs and execution nodes;
- monitoring capacity and performance;
- testing backups and recovery procedures;
- implementing new monitoring and alerting;
- participating in infrastructure commissioning;
- assisting with introduction of new services;
- performing root-cause analysis of recurring failures; and
- participating in scheduled maintenance and, when required, incident response
outside normal working hours.

Mandatory Required Skill Set: Candidates should demonstrate hands-on
competence in the following areas: Systems Administration of Linux systems,
Automation of tasks using python/shell scripting and configuration management
technologies like Ansible etc. good working knowledge of Git platforms and
implementing CI/CD in it, management & administration of Virtualization: VMs /
Containers, good understanding of Networking, experience with infrastructure
monitoring & troubleshooting.
Desired/ Preferred Skill Set: Experience in one or more of the following will be
advantageous: Administration of Scientific/HPC/HTC computing infrastructure
including GPU infrastructure, parallel & distributed storage, scientific data
infrastructure for distributed scientific-data management, virtualization, web &
application infrastructure, identity and access management, networking and security,
site reliability engineering

Desirable Personal and Professional Competencies: The candidate should
possess: robust analytical and troubleshooting ability;
- ability to work systematically during infrastructure/service failures;
- willingness to learn unfamiliar technologies;
- ability to automate rather than repeatedly perform manual tasks;
- good technical documentation skills;
- ability to work collaboratively with system, network, storage, security and scientific-
software teams;
- ability to communicate technical problems and solutions clearly; and willingness to
participate in planned maintenance and critical incident-response activities when
required.
GENERAL INFORMATION / DETAILS ABOUT THE POST
1) The appointment is purely temporary and will terminate automatically without any notice or
compensation on the termination.
2) The appointed person shall have no claim of appointment/ absorption in the Funding
Agency or in IUCAA, Pune.
3) Appointment of the applicant will be governed by the terms and conditions of the funding
agency particularly applicable to the said project.
4) The qualification prescribed should have been obtained from recognized Universities/
Institutions.
5) Candidates should possess the requisite experience (if any) as on the closing date for
submission of application.

The prescribed Essential Qualifications/ Experience indicated are bare minimum and mere
possession of same will not entitle the candidates to be called for interview/ selection
process. Where the number of applications received in response to an advertisement is
large, it may not be convenient or possible to call all the candidates. The Centre reserves
the right to restrict the number of candidates to be called for written exam/ skill test/
interview to a reasonable limit, on the basis of qualifications and experience higher than
that of the minimum prescribed in the advertisement. The candidates should, therefore,
furnish full details of qualifications and experience possessed in the relevant fields, over
and above the minimum prescribed. Documentary evidences of qualification and
experience will be verified during the selection process. Any discrepancy found in
documents of candidates will lead to cancellation of their candidature.

7) The applicant will be solely and entirely responsible for the authenticity of information

his/ her own eligibility to the post(s) for which he/ she is appearing in accordance to this
advertisement. If it is detected at any time in future, during the process of selection or even
after appointment that the candidate was not eligible as per the prescribed rules of the
Centre which could not be detected at the time of selection for whatsoever reason, his/her

appropriate stage.
10) No TA/DA will be admissible for appearing for the selection process.
11) The number of posts indicated may increase or decrease as per the Centre’s requirement.
12) Selected candidate(s) will have to join duty immediately on receipt of the offer letter.
13) No interim enquiries/ correspondence/ communication of any sort will be entertained on the
matter.
14) Canvassing in any form and/ or bringing any influence by an applicant, will lead to
disqualification of the applicant from the selection process.
15) Jurisdiction: Any dispute arising out of this advertisement and/or applications submitted in
