About the RoleWe are seeking a senior software engineer with expertise in distributed systems & event driven architecture to help design and build the core infrastructure of a research-driven technology platform.

This is a senior individual-contributor role for an engineer with strong foundations in distributed systems, backend architecture, real-time data processing, and data-intensive applications. You will work closely with our research and engineering teams to translate complex technical requirements into robust, scalable production systems. The role offers significant ownership over architecture, technology choices, and implementation.

Responsibilities

- Design and build scalable, reliable backend and distributed systems.
- Architect services for real-time and asynchronous data processing.
- Develop infrastructure for managing large volumes of time-dependent and continuously evolving data.
- Design efficient data models, storage systems, and retrieval mechanisms.
- Build systems that support versioning, historical reconstruction, lineage, and auditability.
- Develop event-driven architectures and streaming data pipelines.
- Ensure reliability through fault tolerance, replay, recovery, idempotency, and appropriate consistency guarantees.
- Optimise systems for performance, scalability, maintainability, and operational simplicity.
- Establish engineering standards and contribute to key architectural and infrastructure decisions.
- Take ownership of major systems from initial design through production deployment and operation.

Qualifications & Experience
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with substantial experience in backend,



infrastructure, or distributed systems engineering.
- Strong understanding of distributed systems, concurrency, systems design, and production reliability.
- Experience building and operating production-grade, data-intensive applications.
- Experience with event-driven, streaming, stateful, or temporal systems.
- Robust understanding of databases, data modelling, versioning, lineage, and historical data management.
- Experience with technologies such as Kafka, Redpanda, PostgreSQL, ClickHouse, Redis, object storage, or comparable systems.
- Proficiency in at least one backend or systems programming language such as Go, Rust, Java, C++, or Python.
- Experience designing systems for fault tolerance, replay, recovery, idempotency, and consistency.
- Ability to independently design systems, evaluate technical trade-offs, and drive implementation from architecture through production.
- Experience in financial technology, market data, observability, distributed databases, scientific computing, or other high-throughput data environments is valuable.

Candidate ProfileYou are a strong systems engineer who enjoys solving difficult infrastructure problems where the solution is not already defined.

You are comfortable working at both the architectural and implementation level, can reason clearly about trade-offs between performance, reliability, complexity, and cost, and can build systems that remain robust as they scale.

You will be joining a multidisciplinary team working across engineering, mathematics, and computational research, so the ability to collaborate effectively with highly technical researchers is important.
