About Medtronic LABS
At Medtronic LABS, we believe in the power of technology to transform lives, especially where healthcare systems are most fragile. As a mission-driven, non-profit health systems innovator, we design and scale tech-enabled care delivery models that bring essential health services closer to underserved communities. Our work strengthens primary healthcare and creates pathways to better health and equity for people with limited access to care.
This is a unique chance to apply your technology expertise for real-world impact. Not just building software, but enabling better care, greater opportunity, and lasting change for those who need it most.
Medtronic LABS operates in Kenya, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Rwanda, Bangladesh, Tanzania, India, Bhutan, and the United States. Our team values openness, shared purpose, and entrepreneurial drive. We offer meaningful growth for high-performing individuals who are aligned with our mission.
About the role
Owns test strategy and CI quality gates for a codebase built heavily with AI coding assistants — the anti-slop control for the whole build. This role's core performance measure is whether the test suite would actually fail if the code were wrong, not whether it passes.
What you’ll do
- Test strategy design — designs the test strategy for each POD's components, not just executes a plan someone else wrote
- Mutation testing — owns configuration, thresholds, and the survivor-triage loop; feeds surviving mutants back to engineers, and to the coding agent, as concrete gaps to close
- CI quality gates — owns G1 (mutation score), G2 (traceability), G5 (spec-precedence); co-owns G3 (error-masking) with the Architect
- Privacy Gate Enforcement:
Builds automated tests to catch PII leaks in logs/APIs, verifies consent enforcement, and audits data retention expiry.
- Traceability tooling — owns the Verifies: marker linkage and orphan-detection checks in both directions
- Defect-replay suite — builds and maintains a regression suite reconstructed from real production defects
- Cross-POD consistency — applies the same quality bar to both PODs without becoming a queue either POD waits on for its own test-writing
Decision authority
- Decides test strategy and gate thresholds for standard code independently.
- Gate thresholds or waivers on critical/clinical-adjacent code require Architect sign-off, and Program Director plus Clinical Governance Board sign-off where the Acceptance Standard requires it.
What we’re looking for Must-have
- 5+ years in test automation / SDET, not manual QA
- Built and maintained CI pipelines with automated test gates
- Strong scripting in Python or JavaScript/TypeScript
- Has designed test strategy for a real product, not just executed a test plan someone else wrote
- Comfortable pushing back on engineers and holding a quality bar under delivery pressure
- AI-first, 10x mindset — designs the test harness and gates assuming a codebase being generated at 10x speed by AI coding agents, where slop-detection has to move as fast as the code does
Nice-to-have
- Any exposure to mutation testing (Stryker, PIT, mutmut)
- Property-based/fuzz testing exposure
- Static analysis tooling (Semgrep, SonarQube, CodeQL)
Preferred education Tier 1 engineering institute preferred — not required if the automation portfolio is strong.
Engagement type: Fixed-term consultancy
Duration: 12 months, fixed term
