Company Description MUSE is a nonprofit organization founded to address pressing needs and challenges faced by rural communities in India, with a strong focus on Spiti, a remote high-altitude cold desert in the Himalayas where its work began in 2002. The organization’s initiatives span economic empowerment, environmental conservation, and sustainable development, creating impact across multiple sectors.

MUSE supports communities through renewable energy and carbon reduction projects, climate resilience and improved access to water, healthcare, education, enhanced nutrition, and livelihood programs. It also undertakes animal welfare, waste reduction, and conservation-focused livelihood initiatives that protect nature and cultural heritage. MUSE Vision Centre is being developed to provide accessible, quality primary eye care to the remote communities of Spiti Valley

Role Description This is a full-time, in office Optometrist role based at Kaza (Spiti Valley) in the Lahaul and Spiti district. The Optometrist will provide primary eye care services, including comprehensive eye examinations, vision testing, refraction, and prescribing corrective lenses.

The role involves diagnosing common ocular conditions, identifying cases that require specialist referral, and educating community members on eye health and preventive care. The Optometrist will work closely with local health workers and partner organizations to organize eye camps, maintain accurate patient records, and ensure continuity of care. In addition, the Optometrist will contribute to community outreach initiatives that align with MUSE’s mission of improving overall quality of life in remote rural settings.

Qualifications

- Recognized Degree Optometry (B.Sc Optom/B.Optom), with eligibility to practice in India.
- Comfortable working in remote,



high-altitude environments and willingness to travel within the Lahaul and Spiti district.
- Language skills in English and Hindi.

Key Responsibilities

- Demonstrated skills in comprehensive eye examinations, refraction, and prescribing glasses or contact lenses.
- Perform objective and subjective refraction, retinoscopy and visual acuity assessment.
- Conduct binocular vision, paediatric and basic ocular health screening.
- Screen for cataract, glaucoma suspects, diabetic/hypertensive eye changes and other common ocular conditions.
- Identify red-flag cases and ensure appropriate referral to ophthalmologists.
- Provide spectacle prescriptions and support optical dispensing/fitting.
- Conduct patient counselling and eye-health education.
- Participate in village, school and community eye-screening programmes.
- Maintain accurate patient records, referrals and follow-ups, using basic digital tools, and adhering to healthcare protocols.
- Operate and maintain optometric equipment.
- Support the day-to-day clinical functioning of the Vision Centre.
- Participate in outreach activities across remote areas of Spiti.
- Strong communication and counseling skills for educating individuals and communities on eye health.

Preferred

- 1–3 years' clinical experience.
- Experience in an eye hospital, vision centre, optical practice or community eye-care programme.
- Prior experience in community health, public health programs, or NGO settings is an advantage.
- Additional training in paediatric optometry or ocular disease screening.
- Fresh graduates with the right attitude and clinical skills are encouraged to apply.
