About the role
We're developing an ophthalmic diagnostic instrument and need an optical design engineer to model and validate a key optical subsystem in simulation before we move to hardware fabrication.
What you'll actually do
- Build and validate a Zemax/OpticStudio model of a rotating multi-element optical assembly used for variable refractive power correction
- Verify modeled optical performance against theoretical predictions using real lens curvature, thickness, and material data
- Characterize aberrations introduced across the assembly's full operating range
- Verify explicit aperture / vignetting performance for the intended use case across that range
- Model interaction effects with an adjacent optical correction stage in the same light path
- Recommend final component specifications (dimensions, power, material, coating) based on simulation results
- Produce a validated optical design spec for handoff to mechanical/optomechanical engineering and prototype bench-testing
Must-have
- Hands-on experience with Zemax OpticStudio (or equivalent — Code V) on shipped optical designs
- Solid grounding in geometric/physical optics: lens power,
aberration theory, ray tracing, aperture analysis
- Able to work from first-principles optical formulas and conceptual specs, not just pre-built templates
Strongly preferred
- Prior experience with ophthalmic/refractive optics — phoropters, autorefractors, trial lens systems, or similar clinical vision instruments
- Familiarity with diopter-based power specification and ophthalmic lens tolerancing
- Experience designing for motorized/rotating optomechanical assemblies
Nice-to-have
- Python/MATLAB scripting for parametric sweeps and merit-function optimization
- Medical device development experience, particularly under regulatory constraints
Deliverables
1. Zemax model of the assembly with the relevant parameter swept
2. Aberration and vignetting analysis across the operating range
3. Recommended final component specification
4. Written report for fabrication handoff and future regulatory documentation
