This role is accountable for delivering secure, repeatable, and low-risk migrations by coordinating source system readiness, replication, test cutovers, production cutovers, and post-migration validation. The ideal candidate combines strong infrastructure engineering experience with hands-on AWS migration expertise, automation skills, and disciplined execution. This person will work closely with application teams, cloud platform teams, security, networking, and operations to ensure workloads are migrated in alignment with enterprise cloud standards, operational requirements, and business timelines.
Key Responsibilities
- Migration Planning: Readiness Assess on-premises workloads for migration suitability, dependencies, and technical constraints. Develop migration plans, wave groupings, and cutover strategies for servers and applications moving to AWS. Validate source readiness including operating system support, agent installation prerequisites, network connectivity, and application dependencies. Coordinate migration prerequisites across infrastructure, networking, security, and application teams.
- AWS MGN Execution: Install, configure and manage AWS MGN replication agents on source servers. Monitor continuous replication health, replication lag, and issue resolution throughout the migration lifecycle. Configure launch settings and templates for target AWS instances including networking, storage, security groups, and instance profiles. Execute non-disruptive test migrations and support production cutover events.
- Validation/Cutover: Create and execute cutover runbooks for migration events. Coordinate shutdown, final synchronization, instance launch validation,
and rollback activities as needed. Partner with application owners and testing teams to validate functionality, performance, integrations, and data consistency after migration. Document cutover outcomes, remediation actions, and lessons learned.
- Security/Compliance Standards: Ensure migrated workloads align with enterprise cloud standards for IAM, networking, logging, encryption, backup, tagging, and monitoring. Support post-migration security validation including vulnerability remediation and baseline hardening. Maintain documentation and evidence artifacts required for governance, audit, and operational handoff.
- Automation/Continuous Improvement: Contribute to migration playbooks, repeatable runbooks, templates, and automation patterns to improve migration speed and quality. Support use of infrastructure-as-code and systems management tooling for post-launch configuration and standardization. Identify opportunities for optimization, right-sizing, and modernization following rehost migration completion. Drive continuous improvement in migration execution throughput and success metrics.
- Hands-on experience migrating workloads from on-premises environments to AWS.
- Robust understanding of: AWS core services, especially EC2, EBS, VPC, IAM, CloudWatch, Route 53, and AWS Backup.
- Windows and/or Linux server administration.
- Hybrid connectivity concepts such as VPN and Direct Connect.
- DNS, firewalls, routing, and server/network troubleshooting.
- Experience creating and executing migration runbooks and cutover plans.
- Strong troubleshooting skills across operating systems, infrastructure, and cloud environments.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work across technical and non-technical teams.
- Experience in large-scale enterprise migration programs or migration factory models.
- Experience with Terraform, CloudFormation, or other infrastructure-as-code tools.
- Experience using AWS Systems Manager SSM, automation scripts, or configuration management tools.
- Experience supporting application validation or coordinating with application teams during migration events.
Key Competencies
- Execution discipline able to run complex migrations with precision and low operational risk.
- Problem solving identifies and resolves technical blockers quickly and effectively.
- Automation mindset seeks repeatability, standardization, and scale.
- Collaboration works effectively across cloud, infrastructure, security, and application teams.
- Communication communicates clearly during planning, testing, and cutover events.
- Risk awareness proactively identifies dependencies, failure points, and rollback triggers.
Success Measures
- Successful execution of migration waves within agreed timelines.
- High first-time migration success rate.
- Minimal business disruption and downtime during cutover.
- Complete post-migration validation and operational handoff.
- Adherence to enterprise cloud standards and security requirements.
