The Head of Nursing is a senior leadership role responsible for the strategic direction, operational management, and quality assurance of nursing services across all departments of Azim Premji Foundation Hospital and Medical College. This role is critical to the T-6 operationalization phase of the hospital — setting up the nursing department from inception, establishing systems, policies, SOPs, and staffing structures that align with national and international quality standards including NABH and JCI. The incumbent will work closely with clinical, administrative, and paramedical departments to ensure the highest standards of patient care, staff competency, and regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities 1.

Department

Setup &

• Operationalization • Lead the end-to-end setup of the nursing department, including staffing models, ward organization, duty structures, and workflow design.

• Develop and operationalize nursing SOPs, policies, guidelines, and manuals aligned with NABH/JCI standards.

• Establish nursing stations, equipment checklists, inventory protocols, and patient care standards across all wards and specialties.

• Create forms, formats, registers, and nursing documentation systems (both paper-based and digital).

• Design and implement Credentialing &

• Privileging processes for nursing staff in coordination with HR and clinical leads. 1.

Nursing

Administration &

• Workforce Management • Oversee recruitment, selection, and induction of nursing personnel across general wards, ICUs, OTs, OPDs, and specialty areas.

• Manage and supervise a large nursing workforce, including Staff Nurses, Senior Nurses, Nursing Supervisors, and Nursing In-charges.

• Prepare and manage duty rosters, shift schedules, staffing ratios, and deployment plans across all departments.

• Conduct regular performance appraisals, counsel underperforming staff, and facilitate disciplinary actions as required.

• Coordinate across administrative, clinical, and paramedical departments to ensure seamless cross-functional operations.

1. Quality, Standards &

• Compliance • Ensure nursing practice complies with NABH (National Accreditation Board for Hospitals) and JCI nursing standards and requirements.

• Monitor and report on Nursing KPIs — Structural Indicators (staff-patient ratios, bed capacity), Process Indicators (medication administration rates, care bundles), and Outcome Indicators (pressure ulcer rates, fall rates, CLABSI, CAUTI, VAP).

• Lead nursing audits, quality improvement initiatives, and root cause analyses for adverse nursing events.

• Implement and monitor infection control practices including hand hygiene compliance,



aseptic technique, biomedical waste management, and healthcare-associated infection (HAI) prevention protocols.

• Oversee wound care programs, vaccination protocols, and clinical nursing procedures as per standard guidelines.

1. Training, Education &

• Competency Development • Design and oversee nursing induction programs for all newly joined nursing staff.

• Ensure all nursing staff are trained and certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).

• Plan and execute regular in-service training, continuing nursing education (CNE), and skill upgrade programs.

• Coordinate clinical education for nursing students in collaboration with the Medical College's academic nursing faculty.

• Maintain competency records, training logs, and ensure updated certifications across the nursing workforce. 1.

Patient

Care &

• Safety • Maintain the highest standards of patient-centered care, ensuring patient dignity, privacy, comfort, and safety at all times.

• Monitor patient safety indicators and implement nursing care bundles and evidence-based care practices.

• Handle patient and family grievances related to nursing care with empathy and professionalism.

• Ensure proper implementation of patient identification protocols, medication safety checks, and fall prevention programs.

1. Documentation &

• Reporting • Maintain accurate nursing records, incident reports, near-miss reports, and nursing care plans.

• Prepare and present periodic nursing performance reports to hospital leadership.

• Ensure complete and accurate use of nursing forms, formats, and registers as per hospital and accreditation requirements.

Requirements • B.Sc. Nursing (4-year program) or M.Sc. Nursing from a recognized university/institution • M.Sc. Nursing or Post Graduate Diploma in Nursing Administration / Nursing Management • Valid and active nurse registration with Jharkhand Nurses Council and Valid BLS and ACLS certification (mandatory)

• Infection Control certification is an advantage • Minimum 20 years in clinical nursing and nursing administration.

• Minimum 10 years in nursing administration roles (e.g., Matron, Deputy Nursing Superintendent, Nursing Superintendent)



• Minimum 5 years as a nursing team leader in a recognized teaching hospital • Experience from charitable, public-spirited, mission-driven, or government teaching hospitals will be given preference • In-depth nursing knowledge of infection control, wound care, vaccination protocols, medication management, and critical care nursing.

• Thorough familiarity with NABH and JCI nursing standards, nursing-specific accreditation requirements, and quality frameworks.

• Working knowledge of Nursing KPIs — Structural Indicators (staffing ratios, bed-to-nurse ratio), Process Indicators (compliance rates, care bundle adherence), and Outcome Indicators (fall rates, infection rates, patient satisfaction scores).

• Expertise in Credentialing &

• Privileging of nursing staff, nursing competency frameworks, and scope-of-practice management.

• Hands-on experience in creating and implementing nursing SOPs, clinical care pathways, nursing protocols, and standard formats. Leadership &

• Operational Competencies • Proven ability to build and lead large nursing teams from ground zero, including recruitment, induction, and day-to-day management.

• Strong cross-departmental coordination skills — ability to work effectively with clinical (medical), administrative, and paramedical departments.

• Experience in workforce planning, duty roster preparation, grade structuring, and deployment of nursing staff across departments.

• Sound understanding of labor laws, nursing workforce regulations, and employee relations in a hospital setting. Training &

• Development • Demonstrated experience in designing and conducting nursing induction, BLS/ACLS training, and in-service education programs.

• Ability to assess and address competency gaps among nursing staff through structured training interventions.
