Role Overview

We are looking for an experienced

Freelance PostgreSQL / Cloud Database Engineer to design, manage, optimize, and support highly available PostgreSQL environments running on Kubernetes and major cloud platforms. The role requires robust hands-on experience with PostgreSQL HA/DR, cloud-native database technologies, automation, monitoring, backup/recovery, and data-platform integrations.

Key Responsibilities

- Manage and optimize

PostgreSQL databases, SQL workloads, replication, WAL, vacuum/autovacuum, locks, and blocking sessions.

- Implement

HA/DR using

CloudNativePG (CNPG), Patroni, PgBouncer

, streaming replication, and synchronous/asynchronous replication.

- Manage PostgreSQL workloads on

Kubernetes, EKS, AKS, GKE, and OpenShift

, including Pods, PV/PVC, StorageClass, and Stateful workloads.

- Implement backup, restore, Barman/Barman Cloud, PITR

, and disaster recovery strategies with defined RPO/RTO.

- Perform query performance tuning

, EXPLAIN ANALYZE, index optimization, schema migration, and database capacity planning.

- Build infrastructure and deployment automation using

Terraform, Helm, Ansible, Git, and CI/CD

.

- Configure monitoring and observability using

Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, CloudWatch

, alerting, and incident management practices.





- Work with

CDC and streaming/data platforms including Kafka, Amazon MSK, AWS Glue, Glue Data Catalog, Apache Iceberg, Trino, Spark/PySpark, Delta Lake, Athena, Redshift, and Airflow/MWAA.

- Work with AWS services including

S3, IAM, EBS, VPC, and CloudWatch

.

- Troubleshoot production incidents, perform

RCA

, and implement preventive improvements.

- Follow security and compliance requirements including

HIPAA and PCI-DSS

.

Required Skills

Must have:

- Strong PostgreSQL and SQL administration experience.

- Hands-on PostgreSQL HA/DR, replication, WAL, backup/restore and PITR.

- Experience with

CNPG and/or Patroni and

PgBouncer

.

- Strong Kubernetes experience with Stateful workloads, Pods, PVC/PV and StorageClass.

- Experience with at least one major cloud platform; AWS preferred.

- Strong performance tuning and production troubleshooting experience.

- Experience with Terraform, Helm, Ansible and CI/CD.

- Monitoring with Prometheus/Grafana and production incident management.

Good to have:

- Kafka / Amazon MSK and CDC.

- AWS Glue, Iceberg, Trino, Spark/PySpark, Delta Lake, Athena and Redshift.

- Airflow / MWAA / Polaris.

- HIPAA / PCI-DSS environments.
