At Nationwide®, “on your side” goes beyond just words. Our customers are at the center of everything we do and we’re looking for associates who are passionate about delivering extraordinary care.
- Java Integration and Data Acquisition Engineer
About the role
Nationwide's Cyber Security Operations Center is hiring a hands-on Java engineer to own and extend our existing fleet of integration services that acquire, normalize, and deliver data from complex enterprise and third-party systems. Day one, you'll begin taking over existing projects that execute telemetry and retention pulls from a range of APIs — solving the hard problems that appear beyond a simple REST call: evolving contracts, pagination, throttling, async workflows, GraphQL, Microsoft Graph, gRPC, tricky encodings, and binary data. Over time, the role grows to include Angular backend development — the database access, service orchestration, and secure LLM-powered APIs that support Angular front ends.
This is a backend and integration engineering role for someone who pairs strong modern Java skills with the instincts of a protocol and data-format troubleshooter.
What you'll do
- Own, operate, maintain, and extend a fleet of Java/Spring Boot integration projects running telemetry and retention pulls, in a modern CI/CD, Kubernetes, and observability environment.
- Integrate with complex REST, Microsoft Graph, GraphQL, and gRPC APIs, handling auth, pagination, throttling, async workflows, and partial failures.
- Parse and normalize messy JSON, XML, encoded, compressed, and binary payloads — reliably and at scale.
- Build resilient, observable integrations and secure LLM-powered features with proper guardrails.
- Grow into Angular backend-for-frontend development — database access, service orchestration, and secure LLM-powered APIs.
Must-have qualifications
- Advanced Java and strong production experience with Spring Boot and its ecosystem.
- Strong database integration skills — SQL/NoSQL, transactions, schema design, query tuning, and ORM (Spring Data, JPA/Hibernate, JDBC).
- Building and operating containerized Java services through Git-based CI/CD in Kubernetes or comparable orchestration.
- API integration well beyond basic CRUD — auth, pagination, rate limits, retries, and unreliable upstream behavior — including hands-on Microsoft Graph or similarly complex enterprise APIs.
- Working experience consuming or implementing GraphQL, plus gRPC and Protocol BuAers.
- Deep JSON and XML parsing (Jackson, StAX/SAX/JAXB) with secure parser configurations, and byte-level diagnosis of text-encoding and binary-format issues.
- Resilience engineering — timeouts, retries, backoA, circuit breakers, idempotency, and checkpointing — with solid automated testing (JUnit,
contract, and adversarial fixtures).
- Experience integrating applications with LLM APIs or SDKs (structured output, streaming, context limits, provider failures).
- Secure development practices and clear communication of protocol and data quality issues to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Nice to have
- Java 25+ and Spring Boot 4.0+; Microsoft Graph delta sync and subscriptions; Angular BFF patterns with SSE or WebSockets.
- AWS, Kubernetes, Helm, Vault, GitHub Actions, Harness, Splunk, New Relic, Apigee, and Kafka.
- Enterprise LLM platforms, RAG, embeddings, vector search, or agent workflows.
- Working Python or scripting for prototyping of data inspection and rapid API investigation.
- Experience designing backend APIs for Angular or comparable single-page applications (a growth area for this role).
