Job Title: Structural Fitter - Pontoon / Barge Fabrication

We are looking for experienced Structural Fitters for complete fabrication and assembly activities related to steel pontoons, barges, marine structures and heavy structural fabrication.

The candidate should be able to independently carry out marking, cutting, fitting, alignment, assembly and preparation of structural components as per drawings and site requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Carry out structural fitting and assembly for pontoons, barges and marine fabrication work.

Read and understand fabrication drawings, GA drawings, structural drawings and basic welding symbols.

Perform marking and layout of plates, angles, channels, flats, stiffeners, frames, bulkheads and other structural members.

Carry out measuring, marking, cutting, grinding, edge preparation and fit-up activities.

Fit deck plates, bottom plates, side shell plates, bulkheads, stiffeners, web frames, brackets and structural supports.

Check dimensions, levels, diagonals, squareness and alignment during fabrication.

Carry out plate fit-up and joint preparation before welding.

Maintain required root gap and joint alignment as per drawing and welding requirements.

Carry out tack welding where permitted.

Coordinate with welders for final welding and maintain proper sequence of fabrication.

Assist in controlling distortion and dimensional deviation during welding.

Carry out grinding, dressing and preparation of welded areas as required.

Perform structural assembly of individual pontoon sections and complete modules.

Assist in joining and alignment of multiple pontoon sections.





Carry out installation and fitting of structural brackets, lifting points, supports, stiffeners and reinforcement members.

Carry out manhole and access opening fit-up where required.

Assist in fitting spud housings, guide structures, support structures and other barge-related assemblies where applicable.

Use measuring instruments such as measuring tape, spirit level, straight edge, square and basic fabrication tools.

Operate gas cutting equipment and power tools safely.

Check material identification and ensure correct sections and plates are used for fabrication.

Coordinate with supervisors, welders, grinders, riggers and QC personnel.

Assist during inspection and dimensional checks.

Correct fit-up and dimensional issues identified by QC or supervisors.

Maintain proper housekeeping in the work area.

Follow all safety procedures during cutting, grinding, lifting, fitting and fabrication activities.

Candidate Requirements

Minimum 2 to 3 years of experience as a Structural Fitter.

Previous experience in shipbuilding, pontoon fabrication, barge fabrication, heavy engineering, offshore fabrication or structural steel fabrication preferred.

Must be able to read and understand structural fabrication drawings.

Must have practical knowledge of marking, cutting, fitting, alignment and assembly.

Should understand plate thickness,



structural sections and basic fabrication tolerances.

Must be able to work independently from drawings and supervisor instructions.

Experience with carbon steel and IS 2062 structural steel preferred.

Experience in heavy plate fabrication will be an advantage.

Trade Test

Candidates may be required to undergo a practical trade test before final selection.

The test may include

Reading a fabrication drawing

Marking dimensions on plate or structural section

Checking diagonal and squareness

Plate and structural member fit-up

Root gap and joint preparation

Use of measuring tools

Gas cutting and grinding

Alignment of plates and structural members

Assembly of a small structural component

Selection will be based on practical skill, drawing understanding, accuracy and workmanship.

Only candidates with actual structural fitting and fabrication experience should apply.

Candidates should be capable of carrying out complete fitter activities from drawing reading and marking to final structural assembly.
