HEAD - TOOL ROOM

ROLE SUMMARY

Own the execution and upkeep of Gilard's tool-room activities for new and existing press tools, moulds, assembly tools, jigs, fixtures and quality gauges. The role is responsible for converting approved designs into completed, trial-ready tools within the committed timeline and for maintaining tooling availability throughout its working life. Tool design remains with the Design Department; this role provides manufacturability and maintenance inputs and coordinates all required design support.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

- Lead the day-to-day Tool Room, tool-making, machining, fitting, assembly, trial and maintenance activities.
- Own new-tool development after release of approved drawings through manufacture/procurement of parts, inspection, assembly, trial, correction, approval and handover to Production.
- Prepare and control the process flow and operation route for every tool part, including material preparation, machining, CNC/VMC, wire-cut/EDM, grinding, heat treatment, fitting, inspection and outsourced operations, as applicable.
- Plan machines, manpower, materials, bought-out items and external vendors against each project schedule; review progress daily and remove bottlenecks to achieve the committed completion date.
- Ensure every tool part conforms to the approved drawing and is inspected before assembly; prevent non-conforming parts from moving to the next operation.
- Plan tool assembly method, sequence and checkpoints so that all parts fit and function correctly as one complete tool.
- Prepare tools for trial in coordination with Production, Quality and Design, and drive right-first-time output by verifying tool readiness, machine compatibility, materials, process conditions and critical product characteristics before trial.

- Evaluate trial parts against drawing and quality requirements; record observations, close corrections promptly and obtain approval before production handover.
- Develop, modify, refurbish and maintain press tools, moulds, assembly tools, jigs, fixtures and quality gauges as per approved requirements.
- Create and execute preventive-maintenance plans based on tool criticality, usage, condition and tool life; maintain tool-history, maintenance and modification records.
- Respond to tooling breakdowns, restore production within the shortest practical time, conduct root-cause analysis and implement permanent action to prevent recurrence.
- Identify replacement or newly required maintenance parts and coordinate with the Design Department for drawings, design changes and technical clarification before manufacture.
- Participate in rejection, customer-complaint and quality-review meetings. Where CAPA calls for tooling improvement, translate the action into a controlled implementation plan, complete the modification, validate results and close the action with evidence.
- Maintain control of current drawings, BOMs, process routes, spare-part lists, trial reports, maintenance records and engineering-change status for each tool.
- Manage internal and external tool-making resources, suppliers and job-work; verify quality, delivery and cost before acceptance.
- Lead and develop Tool Room personnel, enforce safe working practices and maintain 5S,

machine upkeep and disciplined use of measuring instruments.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

- Strong hands-on knowledge of manufacture, assembly, try-out and maintenance of press tools and moulds; experience with assembly tools, jigs, fixtures and quality gauges is preferred.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, tolerances, GD&T;, tool drawings, BOMs and specifications. The role does not require independent tool-design responsibility.
- Strong process-planning knowledge across conventional machining, CNC/VMC, EDM/wire-cut, grinding, heat treatment, fitting, spotting, polishing and inspection.
- Ability to diagnose tooling-related defects, breakdowns and repeat failures using structured root-cause analysis and CAPA methods.
- Working knowledge of tool steels, heat treatment, surface treatment, fits, clearances, measuring instruments and tool-room quality controls.
- Good project planning, prioritisation, vendor coordination, documentation, team leadership and cross-functional communication skills.
- Awareness of automotive quality systems, including IATF 16949, PFMEA, Control Plans, change control and traceable maintenance records. (Preferred)

QUALIFICATION

Diploma / Advanced Diploma in Tool & Die Making, Die and Mould Manufacturing, Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent relevant qualification preferrably from Central Tool Room Ludhiana or ISTC, Chandigarh.

EXPERIENCE

Minimum 10 years of relevant automotive or precision-manufacturing experience in tool development and tool maintenance, including at least 3 years leading a Tool Room team and managing multiple tooling priorities.
